The Soul of the City: a focus on the arts

Dallas has always had an artistic soul.  The culture and heritage of our city, like most great cities, owes a tremendous debt to the arts community.  Supporting local art something we care deeply about and we’d like to do everything we can to help the local arts community thrive.  Unfortunately, too often media attention is monopolized by corporate interests and tabloid gossip – but culture doesn’t come from a focus on celebrity breakups it comes from a focus on the arts.  Below, you’ll find some incredible artists that we hope you will check out, follow and support.

The kind folks @legionpaper sent me some of their papers to test a little while ago and I’ve slowly been making my way through it. One of the items they sent was a Stonehenge Aqua hot pressed block… I was intimidated at first, have done precisely 0 finished paintings on hot pressed paper before. I think I just assumed it wouldn’t be a good fit for all the layering I do in my work (spoiler: I was 100% wrong). Anyway, I did a few gouache paintings on it first (hot pressed paper is awesome for gouache illustrations) before deciding I should maybe give some of my watercolor layering work a go. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was the first watercolor piece I did with the block. It behaved as I expected it to—the colors are a little less vibrant on the surface, and paint also dried much faster… what I did not expect was how much fun I had with these different properties! Because paint dries much faster, I was able to create interesting textures between blends and layers. Those who have been following me for a while know how much I love integrating organic elements in the more structured straight lines of my work, and this was a great way to do some of that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With a bit of control and practice, I think I should be able to achieve an almost acrylic-like look to my paintings which might be fun to experiment with in the future. I did a second painting with WAY more layers which I will share next week—knowing how fast the paint dries, I was able to work faster and a bit differently to get a smoother look (not better, just different and closer to what I’m used to). So glad I experimented and tried out hot pressed paper, it definitely does not work the same as cold pressed but I’ve learned that I can 1) still achieve almost the same looks as I do on CP paper, and 2) get different looks that I’m excited to try more in the future! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ・・・・・・・・・・ Paint: Daniel Smith watercolors Brushes: Princeton Neptune round size 12 Paper: Stonehenge Aqua 140# HP ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolorpainting #geometricart #dallasartist #dsart #dscolor #doitfortheprocess #handpainted #abstractart #modernart #artistsoninstagram #danielsmithwatercolors #legionpaper #stonehengepaper
