about to go about three levels of deep right now : who reads vogue? I subscribe to the magazine and am excited every time I see it in my mailbox, but I don’t read the magazine. I’m subscribing so that I have access to the ad campaigns and am exposed to the photography, and have an understanding of what the people who “matter” in the fashion industry are thinking. There are other publications (ehem @darling) that I sit, read, soak up, immerse myself in their message. I don’t have the same relationship with Vogue. It almost feels like it’s challenging me to think more critically about it because – well why else would I read it than to understand it as it applies to my life and then to other people’s lives? Darling is approachable, Vogue is high-end fashion that I frankly do not understand sometimes. Sometimes I think we COULD use more of that in the world. I certainly do not agree with a lot of the articles in Vogue, and I do wonder how much responsibility that particular magazine has to be posting more and more politically liberal content, but I definitely think that exposure to what a large portion of my industry pays attention to is important. Just like it’s important to listen to multiple news sources – local, national, conservative, liberal… NOT Facebook. Pay attention to what’s happening, listen to experts, think critically, have an opinion, but I feel like we need to work on bridging a gap to say “I do understand where you’re coming from, but here is my informed opinion.” It takes time and effort, and I’m not saying people don’t do this, but that’s where my thoughts on @voguemagazine took me, and that’s what I decided to share this morning. #instablog // photo for @ericaaulds
