Flashes & Strokes: a Tale of Two Mediums

The digital and traditional arts are thriving in Dallas. From newer, technology based media like photography and digital art to more traditional art, there is so much to see, explore and learn from in the DFW area.  Through our Flashes and Strokes series, we’d like to celebrate artists from both worlds: traditional and digital.

Did you see my Stories recently (I’m feebly attempting to post a few things there again)? I just started a big, big project: doing a massive watercolor paper test/comparison across different brands. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a while, and after recently running out of my latest stash of Kilimanjaro paper, it seemed like a good time to test what else is out there. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I currently have 13 brands (with more coming!)—some with a number of different papers each (hot pressed vs cold pressed, natural vs. bright white, 140# vs 300#, etc). I will be keeping all important information (papers tested, results as I test each paper) in my Stories Highlights, so feel free to go there if you want to refer back to anything. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Swipe to see the things I’ll be testing (and see the cardboard template I made to create the boxes for each page). Each sheet is 8.5”x11” and kept in a 3 ring binder. I will be testing two sheets of each paper, one for the front side, one for the back (some papers are remarkably different btwn front and back and you might prefer one over the other). Keep in mind that I developed this test mostly for my own purposes and painting style. If you’re doing your own tests, you should definitely make sure to test whatever you’ll be doing most in your work. That being said, I think I’m covering a pretty wide range of techniques and properties, enough to give you a sense of whether a particular paper would be suitable for you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is currently still a blank spot on each page. I think masking fluid tests would be valuable in the future but since I currently don’t use masking fluid often it’s not worth it for me to test quite yet. I’m basically saving this space for anything that might come up later on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Be on the lookout for results as they come! I’ll be posting them to my Stories Highlights as well as to some kind of blog whenever I get my new brand and site up and running. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ___ #watercolor #watercolorart #watercolorpainting #watercolorswatch #watercolorartist #watercolorpalette #doitfortheprocess #papertest #papercomparison #watercolorpaper #paperlove #paperporn #papers #paperporn #paperswatches

How freaking cute is it that otters hold hands when they sleep! For your Nat Geo lesson of the day – often a mother and her otter pup will hold on to each other while sleeping to keep from drifting away from one another. I mean come on, is there a sweeter symbol of motherly love than that? 🤱🏻 This also makes me think about all the times we hold a loved one’s hand. A spouse, a child, a parent, a friend. We can all use a little support to keep from floating away, and to stay the course. 👫 👭 👬. • “You Otter Know” 12×12 Acrylic and Watercolor on Paper • . . . #otter #holdinghands #acrylicart #homedecor #interiordecor #artistinstudio #abeautifulmess #instaart #acrylic #originalart #artgallery #createeveryday #carveouttimeforart #livecolorfully #makearteveryday #colorsplash #calledtobecreative #flashesofdelight #makeyousmilestyle #artforthehome #pursuepretty #seekinspirecreate #passioncolorjoy #dallasartist #dallasdesign #dallasinteriordesign #texasartist #womenartists #mioneplantart #mandala
