Throughout our journey with Voyage, the one thing we have learned over and over is that hidden within every challenge is a blessing or opportunity. It’s up to us to determine whether a challenge we face will be a step back or the catalyst for a step forward.
We had the honor of connecting with some of the city’s brightest female leaders and role models and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.
Below, you’ll find their advice and links and other info so you can learn more about them, their work and how to connect with them. We’ll be interviewing many of these amazing women in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

I’ve learned that there are very few things that are insurmountable. When you find a new goal or take on a new challenge you go after it no questions asked. If you think something is too hard then you don’t want it bad enough. If you find yourself stuck or at that point where you want to give up, remind yourself why you chose to do this and how rewarding it will feel to say I did that.

I like to first reflect and take things one step at a time. Knowing my self-worth and staying confident is extremely important. With confidence and patience, I am able to achieve anything! Having a strong support system that encourages you during these challenges is also crucial. Surround yourself with those that believe in you and continue to challenge you.

For those experiencing challenges in life, I would encourage them to try and change their perspective. In life we sometimes go through seemingly grueling challenges but it is important to remember that you have made it THIS FAR already and that any challenges are just small hurdles that you can overcome with a bit of time and effort. It’s easy to feel hopeless, but as long as you remain centered, focus on overcoming the situation, and express gratitude for what IS going right, you can’t lose.
Angela Mutai- Aspiring Model
Sometimes in life we are faced with challenges that seem insurmountable, so we allow ourselves to be consumed and overwhelmed by them. I’ve faced many challenges in my short 22 years, but the one thing that has kept me going is being able to shift my perspective. Our minds are very powerful and what we believe drives our actions and emotions. We have to choose to believe that challenges don’t have the power to define us or our season in life. With that said, we must use the challenges to our advantage as a learning opportunity. Challenges help sharpen key character traits such as perseverance and strength that we must embody to make it through life. I encourage you today to look at the challenges you face in a positive light, knowing that you have victory over them!

Break down the big picture, take on your goal one day or even one hour at a time. Don’t rush it, great things take time. You’ll fail sometimes, but you need to understand failure so you can truly value what it means to succeed.

My advice would be to keep going. No matter what it is, take a small break, breathe, re-evaluate, call in reinforcements if you need to but don’t let challenges stop you. Take each one as a learning curve to be a better business owner and person.
Genevieve Evanson: hairstylist, makeup artist and lifestyle blogger
The best advice I can give you is to breathe. Take a moment out of your day, and take a few, deep breaths. Remember that it is not you against the world, it isn’t even you against the problem. It’s your journey to a solution, and every step you take is a triumph in itself.
Victoria Goodlow – Motivational Speaker and CEO/Co-Founder of The R.O.S.E Foundation
You have nothing to fear! We face challenges all the time. The fact of the matter is how will you react to them. Will you let your emotions take over or will you take action? Look at your challenges as opportunities of growth. They build character, wisdom, and confidence. If you keep avoiding the issue, you will only be doing a disservice to yourself. You’ll never know what’s on the other side of that mountain unless you climb it. The breakthrough you’ve always needed may be right there waiting for you!
Victoria Gibbs – Health and Wellness Coach
I would tell someone that no matter how hard life gets to keep going. Sometimes you have to be the one to pick yourself back up. Either you accept your life as it is or accept the responsibility to change it.
Kristen Clarke- Medical Aesthetician
Positive thoughts bring positive outcomes. Never be afraid of failure because failure doesn’t exist. There’s always a lesson to be learned & there’s always going to be a opportunity waiting for you whether you know it or not!

My best advice for someone facing a challenge that they feel insurmountable would be.. You are feeling like that challenge is insurmountable right now, but if you push through everything, keep your faith up and tell yourself you aren’t willing to give up you will make It through that challenge you are going through. Nothing will last forever. If the challenge is making you feel some type of pain just know pain is only temporary. Go out and fill your soul with greatness and happiness.
Kate Boss – Model & Athlete
Never give up.
My advice would be to take one step at a time. Seek some advise from someone who has overcame the situation you’re in. They can help guide you through with facts and proven actions rather than emotions. Sometimes emotions can take over and make things complicated.

My advice when what you are facing seems insurmountable: Think through on paper; all the scenarios and possibly outcomes. Know you will get through this. Ask yourself, will this really matter in a year? Break it down into smaller steps if possible. Don’t be afraid to seek out Sage advice. Turn down the volume of well meaning family and friends.
Nikki Granett- Fashion Buying Coordinator & Health & Wellness Consultant

Challenges are opportunities in disguise! It took about 32 years (I’m almost 35) for me to understand how God wants us to face these road blocks. If you’re able to see your challenges as opportunities to strengthen your faith, then you can’t fail. Don’t let fear take over. There’s no sense in worrying about what might happen, because our successes and failures are part of a greater plan. Always do your best, be present and have faith in God’s plan.
Model Realtors -Maggie Parks & Kodi Nelso
I would say remember to keep focusing on the positive and allow yourself to change your perspective. Look at the problem from every possible angle and the answer will come to you! Kodi adds, “Break the challenge down into micro goals and start to chip away at them one by one”.
