Throughout our journey with Voyage, the one thing we have learned over and over is that hidden within every challenge is a blessing or opportunity. It’s up to us to determine whether a challenge we face will be a step back or the catalyst for a step forward.
We had the honor of connecting with some of the city’s brightest female leaders and role models and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.
Below, you’ll find their advice and links and other info so you can learn more about them, their work and how to connect with them. We’ll be interviewing many of these amazing women in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

If you find yourself facing a challenge that seems impossible. Make sure to maintain a positive attitude and continue to give it all you have until you overcome it. One of my favorite quotes is “strength doesn’t come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.” Every challenge you overcome gives you strength and confidence to face any future challenges head on. Nothing is impossible, if there’s a will, there’s a way.

This is such a great question. The best advice I’ve ever been given for a challenging time or situation is to turn your fear into excitement. Instead of being scared or feeling hopeless, think of three things that really excite you about the situation your facing. Think of what will happen when you overcome this challenge. Take small steps and don’t give up. There was once a time you wished you are where you are now.

Take your time, think it through and just follow your gut because the moment you stop accepting challenges, is the day you stop moving forward! Just believe in yourself and remember what’s ahead.

Take a deep breath, acknowledge and feel your feeling then ask yourself “what can I do about the situation.” Revaluate yourself and ask for help if need be.

As you’re going through a time of hardship, I’d like to extend a hand. I wish I could say that I’ve felt your struggle, but honestly, I could never feel your pain, as you could never feel mine. I want to encourage you to surround yourself with people that will hold space for you. People that will be your support and your armour without trying to take away from your hurt. And most importantly, be gentle with yourself because there is no timeline for sadness. I so badly want to tell you the pain will go away, but in reality it just changes over time. In the now, surround yourself with beautiful things and beautiful souls. From today on, your life starts to take a new path that will be filled with moments that seem too amazing to be true. Someday this pain will help you tell your story to the world. Big Hugs- Dani

Stay grounded in your faith and trust that God is leading you in the right direction, whether you overcome the challenge or not.

I would tell some one who is challenged with something they feel is insurmountable to focus on the end game. Sometimes when we stay too focused on the blood, sweat and tears that are being shed throughout the process we lose sight of the goal. Stay grounded, motivated, and never let any one define you or what you can do!

Prayer! Every single time I am going through a challenging situation that feels overwhelming or insurmountable I take my concerns to God. No matter how big or small it is, he is always there to provide guidance, peace, and confidence in the decisions that I am making. Sometimes we think that things are too small or unimportant for us to take to him but I constantly remind myself that he is my Heavenly Father and just like our earthly parents who want to help us with anything we bring to them, God is no different. He wants to help us and guide us in all things, big or small. Prayer is my go to in all situations and a constant provider of peace and reassurance.

I think if we look at a challenge or goal as an end result it can be overwhelming and even paralyzing. You have to take it one day or one task at a time. Ask yourself what you can do right now at this moment to help you get there. This helps prevent burnout, allows you to set up smaller, obtainable goals and celebrate those successes along the way.
Siobhan Bunn, hairstylist
The best advice is, when something feels like it’s too much for you. Take a seat back and think about how bad you really want it. Work towards your goals everyday. Have a positive mind set, & keep positive people around you at all time. Everything will turn out, just the way it’s suppose to be.

Trust the process and continue to ride the wave. Each journey of life brings new storms. Just dance through it all. Something great is on the other side. We have to go through it to get to it.
Hanna Munger – Hair Stylist/Salon Suite Owner
My advice to people is to really give yourself time to plan out your goals. Even if that goal feels like it is a million miles away. I wanted so badly to own my own salon right away after graduation, but I knew I needed to work hard, learn the business and continue to improve my craft before I could take that next step. Never give up working against a challenge, but try to remember to have fun while beating that challenge!

We have all been through times in our lives when things seem all but hopeless and that is okay. It is a part of life. The best thing to do is feel it, be a part of it and grieve, whatever that means to you. Everyone is different but acknowledging the struggle and facing it is so important. BUT…when the time is right, think back to the last time you felt this way (I promise for most of us, there has been a time before when we felt defeated) and ask yourself, “Was I able to get through that suffering?” And focus on the other side. Focus on how you will feel when you’ve fought, conquered, and finally came out the other side with more strength, knowledge and power!

Have faith in what your purpose on earth is. Don’t look at how long it takes you to accomplish your dreams, but always focus on the work you’re putting into accomplishing them.
Liz Campbell- Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist
Nothing is truly insurmountable. Stay focused on the ultimate goal and you can get through anything. Nothing should be bigger then your dream!

Everything starts with the mind if you start to tell your self that you can and truly believe it , you will then start to feel it , and once you feel it it will then become true.
