Perspective & Advice for Those Facing Insurmountable Odds

Throughout our journey with Voyage, the one thing we have learned over and over is that hidden within every challenge is a blessing or opportunity. It’s up to us to determine whether a challenge we face will be a step back or the catalyst for a step forward.

We had the honor of connecting with some of the city’s brightest leaders and role models and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.

Below, you’ll find their advice and links and other info so you can learn more about them, their work and how to connect with them. We’ll be interviewing many of these amazing individuals in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

Brooke Pellegrini | Esthetician & Makeup Artist

The best advice that I can give to someone that is facing a challenge that they feel is insurmountable, is to never give up, because the challenges you have overcame in the past have shaped you into the person you are today and the challenges you are overcoming right now are shaping you into person you will be tomorrow. If you give up you will never see the potential that God has created for your life. Keeping that in mind, I would also remind them that God wouldn’t give them more than they could handle and that He gives His toughest battles to His strongest soldiers.  The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.

Amber Guinyard | Aspiring Makeup Artist & Visual Merchandiser

For anyone who feels they are facing a challenge that is insurmountable, I would say pray about it first. Talk to God about whatever you’re facing, and He will definitely shed light on it. Then, I would say remember who you were before the challenge arose. You were probably thriving, living life to the fullest, and happily moving throughout this wild world. The challenge your facing doesn’t change that. Find positivity in every moment and every chance you get. I’ve faced plenty of challenges that I thought I wouldn’t get through, but focusing on the beauty of myself, my growth, my strength, and everything of that nature, helped to pull me through. So keep your head up, beautiful being, you’re going to get through this! I know it!

Megan Bailey | Owner of Megan Elise Interiors LLC | Megan Bailey Interiors

Start small, don’t feel like you have to tackle the whole thing at once.  If you can break it down into smaller more manageable pieces then it wont feel as daunting. Also, don’t ever be afraid to ask for help! 🙂

Dr. Oyinkansola Jinadu | Pro MUA | Master Brow Tech PMU and Body Sculpting Tech

My best advice would be to stay focused and remember why you started toward your goal. Insurmountable challenges are simply opportunities for us to become creative and switch the narrative I our favor.

Shannon Gidney | Designer | Sales Manager | IBB Design Fine Furnishings

Take a deep breath, don’t focus on the challenge as a whole, break it down into manageable pieces and you won’t feel so overwhelmed. Map out a plan and execute it.

Aubrey | Handmade Artisan

My advice would be simple: small steps every day.  When I get overwhelmed by the many tasks of a small business owner, I just remind myself that all I don’t always need to take large leaps over my obstacles, sometimes you can sidestep them just as easily. You can beat whatever you are facing in your own way, on your own terms.

If you are doubting yourself, fake it till you make it. Whatever the challenge is, go through the motions and work towards overcoming it, tell yourself ” I am doing this” and believe it. Sometimes our brains get in the way and we just need to put our fears and insecurities aside to reach our true potential.

Close your eyes and imagine how the challenge could be achieved, then make a plan and follow it.  Be consistent, and overcome each obstacle without giving up.  Always emphasize the positive over the negative, and if necessary reinvent yourself! ..And most importantly never lose faith, because miracles happen every day.

Jordan Hankins | Owner | Broker The Jordan Agency

No challenge is too big to overcome. All challenges are a chance to learn and grow. Give yourself patience to see the learning opportunities regardless if you do not get the outcome you think you deserve.

Anjali Khatri | Marketing Coordinator and Content Creator

My best advice to someone struggling with overcoming a challenge would be to remain positive and keep trying. People need to be more persistent, try different ways and give it time while overcoming any challenge. Lastly, it’s important to be positive and not let negativity affect their focus.

This too shall pass.” In life we pass through challenges that lead to who you were in the past, who we are as a person now and who we will become in the future. The only thing you take from the past through good or bad times are the lessons you learned from situations and remembering where you come from and how far you’ve gotten. Life is both a mental and physical game. It’s about the way you think and the actions you take. To anyone facing a challenge they feel is insurmountable, “This too shall pass.” You see God wrote your story already, you’re living it. So while you feel you can’t overcome a situation he put you though and you feel like giving up, he has his arms wide open and has the answers to every question. God doesn’t put you through anything in life you aren’t strong enough to handle. We all pass through tough times, some worse than others. Many people run to other humans for answers, while I believe you should run to God. God puts people in your life for a reason, they may have passed through a similar situation you can get advice from and choose to see it from a different stand point, but in reality people won’t ever truly understand YOU and your story, because they have their own life to live their own problems to face. That’s why people feel so alone, because they depend and run to people for advice/help when you have to run to God for him to place the RIGHT people in your life to start growing. Look at the bigger picture, for every problem there is a solution, it’s a CHOICE, you know right from wrong naturally. It’s all on you how you want to overcome an obstacle either in a positive or negative way, but the little things you do now will be a memory in the future and you’ll look back and say “I did that, Thank you God. If I wouldn’t have passed through that I wouldn’t be who I am today.” I feel like sacrificing, and struggling are two major things you have to live through to understand the depth of life. It forces you to want to go get it, to become humble, dedicated, committed, ambitious builds up character, and wisdom to achieving anything you set your mind on. Be the person God creates for you to be, not what you want society to see you as. Your mind becomes more at peace and you start to think with your heart, not always your mind. Act out with kindness, analyze situations before reacting to them quickly and regretting things later. Put your trust in God, he lays all the answers right in front of your face each step of the way, you just have to do the right things and in the future you’ll see his blessings he’s given you. He’s always been by your side. You must believe.

The best advice I can give someone about overcoming a major obstacle is to simply take a second to regroup & breathe. Everything will be okay! Often times people (myself included) will let the challenges in their work life stress them out. Sometimes it can seem as though there is no solution in sight. However, struggling in quick sand will only cause you to sink faster. Whatever you do- Do. Not. Panic. Stop rushing the process. Instead, take a breath and refocus. Give yourself a well deserved break & come back to it later. Try to relax & remember that you are fully capable of mastering anything you put your mind to. By facing challenges with a calm & well thought out approach, it is possible to get more done without feeling so frantic. Remember that success is a steady climb. As long as you’re consistent, you will gradually rise to the top.

Lauren Hernandez | Social Worker and Photographer

Try to see the challenge as an opportunity for gaining experience and greater personal growth. Oftentimes, when there’s a goal set in our mind – we may cling on to our particular vision of how everything ‘should be’ as we work on attaining it. Learn to go with life’s flow. Trust that as long as you remain consistent with bettering yourself & your craft, and don’t give in to the feelings of hopelessness or self-doubt, unexpected solutions will present themselves to you! Adaptability and resilience are the keys to personal and professional success.

Every challenge can be overcome. Sometimes you may feel like it is impossible, and like you’re stuck in the situation, but give it some time. Life is supposed to have its ups and downs. Also, you can learn from your challenges, because they help us grow as people. Remember, don’t ever give up!

Debbie Villagomez | Busy Mom of 3 lost 46lbs with Keto

The best advice I can give is to take things one day at a time and decide that you are worth it! Our goals seem impossible sometimes because too much is required to make it happen. If we can take it one day at a time, break it up into small goals, success is much easier to attain. Also, committing to yourself and deciding you are worth it! You are worth the success and the end result – whatever that may be for you. No excuse is worth getting in the way of being your best self!

Kim Plasencia | Vintage Store Owner

I would say the best advice for someone who is facing a challenge they feel is insurmountable is to think positively and don’t quit your day dream! Owning my own business has faced me with so many challenges and it has taken me years to be where I am today. Success definitely did not happen over night for me, I felt like giving up when things weren’t going exactly how I had planned. There were times where I really didn’t think I would ever get to share my passion as my career. I had so many obstacles standing in my way, it really felt like it was impossible. I couldn’t have done it without all of my customers and their support that allowed me to turn my dream into a reality.  Challenges are always in your way to test you, it’s up to you to embrace it with an open mind and open heart.  The best things in life definitely don’t come easy and anything is achievable if you put your heart and soul into everything you do!

I saw something once that said “Slow progress, is still progress”. Sometimes things really seem impossible or so big that you can’t handle, but more than likely, you’re already well on your way so don’t give up! Be patient with yourself and seek others for help! My husband saw the passion in me and gave me the courage and push to start this platform, and now I’m so happy that I have this outlet to be creative and share my eye for fashion! Chase your dreams and don’t give up!

Angelica M. Jacobs | Mamapreneur | Owner & Creator of AM Hair Glam, where your princess shines

I’ve learned as an entrepreneur that you have to just be patient and figure it out! Heck, I’ve cried at times because I was so confused and didn’t know what or how to do something, but every cry and frustration lead me into researching and figuring it out! I had absolutely no clue on taking and editing photos (besides selfies), creating email campaigns or even creating and designing your own website…..just knowing exactly what to do can always feel like a challenge. Especially in my case where I am the only one in charge running the show, I just have to figure it out! Oh and planning is key for sure. Set some dates and get them accomplished little by little, day by day, and with a little glass of wine or two!

To anyone who may be facing a challenge that they feel is insurmountable, I want to give you the same advice I give to myself. My advice is to pray, put your head down and do the work, and watch everything fall into place! I’m a firm believer of doing whatever it takes because I know that we are not put in positions by mistake. I think God gives us dreams to let us know his plan for us. I also believe that if you have an idea or a dream more than once it turns into a goal. In life you have two options. You can grow and conquer any obstacles thrown your way or be stagnant and let life control and conquer you. So, my question to anyone who is facing a challenge that may seem to great to conquer is “What are you going to do?” My suggestion is to pray and boss up! Put your head down and do the work. You aren’t in this position by mistake. It’s only a test and failing should not be an option!

Jesica Clay | Dallas Fort Worth Wedding | Portrait Photographer

When you feel that you are overwhelmed and are having difficulty handling a problem, reach out to someone in your industry that you admire and respect.  I know with me and being in the photography field, I have found nothing but generosity and people offering to help each other with questions, problems and challenges in our businesses.  Everyone is always wanting to help each other and it really is a beautiful thing.  I think that everyone realizes that there is plenty of room for all of us and there is nothing wrong with helping each other out to make us better at what we do so we can serve our customers the best we can!

Christina Austin Lopez | Actor | Singer | Dancer

There are so many different types of challenges that we face throughout life. The most important thing that I have been learning lately is that all challenges are an opportunity to grow. No matter the circumstances, we almost never come out the other side the same; we come out better, stronger, and wiser every time. Challenges also give us a new perspective; a way to change our outlook and to appreciate the good times in life a whole lot more. This is similar to when we are thankful for a little bit of sunshine after week full of storms. So, this being said, my advice would be to embrace any challenge you are facing as a chance  to become a better you because pushing through adversity will always yield better results than you can imagine while going through it.

For someone facing a insurmountable challenge I would tell them to breathe. Take a deep long breath and remember exactly who you are. Remember everything that has brought you to this moment There’s power in your existence even if you don’t feel it. And when you look back after this you’ll find that the universe has a funny way of working for the people face their challenges head on.

My entire life I have known the joy and pride that comes from accomplishing a vision. But, when it came to one of my biggest visions, I was not prepared for one of the darkest expeditions my soul would ever take. When this particular dream was created, I soon discovered that it wasn’t enough just to plan, create, and of course select special pieces that would fill a shelf. I needed to be constantly prepared for different avenues of seeking out and attracting new clientele. And of course, be present daily for every concern; whether I was in the studio/shop or not. For those now thinking, but of course, that’s the basic understanding of running a business. But, within 2 years, that ever present need was becoming a nightmare, and by the time I was in my 5th year of business; I was beyond miserable. Why? Because it’s work, hard work. You must truly be dedicated to living that dream, your “passion,” is a 24/7 commitment. Please understand that finding “passion” is about being a driving force to create. A gift, is all about allowing something that we each have, and it’s developed and shown through time. Financially, of course things were tight. Someone even offered me more funds as a way to relieve the pressure. But money, was only part of the issue. Because in reality, my soul was dying. A bit dramatic, but very true. It was very difficult at that time, for me to accept that something I desired my entire life, was now the catalyst for taking the very essence of my free-spirit. So, I needed to follow my own intuition, and listen to my own heart, over the voices of others-so I closed the doors. With that closure came a cataclysmic course of elements that changed every aspect of my life. Looking back, some would question my intent. Some even tried to shame me for my choices. But, I stayed true to myself, and found the strength where I never thought it was possible. What I didn’t realize at the time, was all the gifts that would come from that venture and that difficult time. It not only a tested my courage, but it broaden my perspective on life and sharpen my skills. Just one of the incredible gifts that I discovered during that time, was when I saw the LOVE of my life walk through my storefront door. Which inspired me to write my first book, and soon I will be starting my fourth book. If you have a dream or desire, you must full-fill it. It’s mandatory that you discover your greatest gifts. Sometimes those gifts are discovered in the ashes of our preconceived notions of what should be, or what was. It’s because of those insurmountable events in my life, that allowed me to truly see what I really wanted, and what I didn’t want. Having a vision in life is paramount, and no matter what those aspirations are, the euphoria that occurs when building those visions is something that only those who have chosen to step into that arena, will understand. Many people face different kind of challenges throughout their lives. I, myself, also have faced challenges that was difficult to overcome. One of the best advice I can give is that no matter what, never give up and stay true to yourself. Whether it is studying for an exam, getting into your dream college, losing someone you love, changing your job, or whatever it may be, those challenges will only make you stronger if you can get through it. Because, you know, “what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger.” Do the best you can and face it! Don’t ever give up because if you do, that’s only your loss!

Welcome to the club! Yep that would be my first piece of advice. You see we all face things that seem insurmountable. In fact, it can happen daily. It’s absolutely 100% human to look at something you’ve never done before and think NO WAY. Me included. I felt that way starting my online business coaching moms 6 years ago. My first piece of advice: You are not alone.

My second piece of advice- You are not alone. You read that right. It’s the same answer. Girl there is someone who has traveled that road before you. Find them and borrow from their wisdom and confidence. The confidence to mount that challenge and ride it out until you cross the finish line. It may be a mentor, coach or friend but find them. People need people.

The last and best piece of advice: You are not alone. Yup same answer. Look to God for His direction, strength, and comfort. He has all the confidence you could ever need. People do need people but most of all people need God. He’s my go to for challenges and He hasn’t left me short of the finish line yet.

Amanda Smith | Fashion Stylist

It almost is….you have to write your own story uses gods hands. When things look bleak, that’s when you get on your knees, be transparent with the lord and ask him WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE ME DO. And then just sit in his presence. You can’t just give up (that should never be an option) grow from from your failures and tragedies and become what you are suppose to.

If you are facing a challenge that seems unattainable, take a deep breath and set smaller goals first. I like to break down my large projects and make smaller ones that lead up to my final design plans. It makes me feel like I am achieving and completing projects more often which is very gratifying in the long run. Plus seeing progression can be very encouraging to completing a larger goal.

Shelbi Tanner | Hairstylist | Blonding/Extension specialist

My advice for anyone facing any kind of insurmountable challenge is to honestly push through with the bad and always remember the reason you are here in the first place. There will ALWAYS be bad days, but for every bad day we face there’s always 10 more good days on top of that. Sometimes with the stress of our everyday lives it’s easy to forget the good and focus on the bad. Earlier this year I learned that if you can just write down 3 good things that happens to you in a day you are setting yourself up for success and happiness. It doesn’t even have to be about work, it could be that you made your bed that morning! Or that you woke up and faced another day when you were unsure if you even wanted to. Being an adult is hard and we have to remember to count our blessings everyday. There are so many things to be thankful for, even when we feel like our world is crumbling. Always count your blessings, always lift people up, and always remember why you are here. We all have a purpose and it’s up to us to remember that!

Katina Cooper-Rabb |  Artist | Owner of Hot Topics Hair Studio

My advice would be to keep pushing forward. Go to a quiet place where you can pray and seek guidance from the Most High. Ask for clarity and listen quietly for the answer to be revealed. Most times the answer is closer than we think. Trust your intuition, it’s usually spot on and always remember everything happens for reason and it usually for the greater good. There’s always a purpose for the pain. Even if you can’t see it at the very moment. Keep pushing… The sun will shine again.
