Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon & Asia Carter.
Hi Brandon & Asia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
That’s BAE was initially formed in early 2021 while just brainstorming ideas of how we could share our stories to help not only support others but encourage others. Brandon and I had been talking for months on starting a podcast, but we weren’t just sold on the idea yet. After many conversations and much prayer, we decided that a podcast could be the perfect platform to start sharing our stories in a way that was authentic to us. Both of us, while similar in so many ways, we had many differences, especially in how we were raised and in our method of thought currently.
From there, we decided that instead of paying people to produce our own merchandise that we would learn that side of the business and we started making our own shirts, which grew into our “That’s B.A.E.” clothing line, and we started creating other items such as custom apparel for parties, masks, wristlets, tumblers and more. Although this was more than enough to keep us busy, we were still looking for that niche that we felt had not been explored so readily, which is when we decided to research and start making our own brand of Hookah Shisha. We had not heard of any other Black Owned Shisha, and as hookah users, we figured we would give it a try, which led to the creation of “B.A.E. Smokes” which is a homemade shisha.
As of now, we still are creating content for the podcast, creating logos for businesses, event planning, Sip & Paint or Smoke (Shisha only) & Paint parties, apparel, tumblers and probably much more to come. Our hope is to become a household name and that the That’s B.A.E. name becomes an entertainment empire. That’s what the B.A.E. stands for, Brandon & Asia Entertainment and we are heavy on the entertainment part!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This definitely has not been a smooth road, and honestly we have a long way to go in building this brand. I think the first struggle was just coming up with a name that would be catchy but also encompass everything that we wanted to build. In a market that is so saturated with so many talented people designing things, there is also just the struggle of gaining support from others and making a quality product so that others want to buy into your business. Learning how to break through the algorithms of social media and just getting other people’s eyes on your products.
It’s constant work. Alongside us working full-time jobs, being parents, this is another full-time job. Who has time to sleep when there are orders to be filled, so finding the balance between everything is definitely a struggle, but it’s worth it!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
By trade, Asia is a Licensed Master of Social Work. I work in the mental health field as a mental health clinician. My background has been in child advocacy, working with those that have a criminal background who are trying to reintegrate back into society, and of course our homeless/ mentally ill community. Within the open constraints of our business, I think that I am the more administrative, technological part of the twosome. I enjoy the behind the scenes part of running a business while my partner is quite the opposite. But I love to let my creative juices flow into building a logo or designing a shirt. Luckily when the business is yours, you can really dibble and dabble into any part that you want.
Brandon has worked in the Criminal Justice/ Commissioned Security field for 15 plus years, I’m currently the Head of Security for a North Texas Hospital. Helping & keeping others safe is a big part of my line of work. I have a natural ability to lead others & make critical decisions in high stressful situations. In my field of work, I’ve seen & experienced a lot of adversity. I’ve helped people get through many life crisis. Such as losing a loved one, being a victim of physical abuse, having suicidal intentions, etc. My most memorable moment to this day is talking down a suicidal teenager who was about to attempt suicide by jumping off the ledge of a building. I gave him hope, I gave him encouragement, I prayed with him & for him. I let him know that the troubles that he faced that day will not last forever. I was able to get him the psychiatric help that he needed. Although the field I’m in is very rewarding; I feel like I have so much more to offer. I feel That’s B.A.E will allow me to tap into all of my talents & skill sets.
I think what sets our business apart from others is probably just the variety of things that we offer within our business. We try hard to make That’s B.A.E and one stop shop for your entertainment needs. We may not do it all yet, but we are heading in that direction. Not only do we want to be a place for just entertainment. We also hope to provide inspiration, motivation & real-life advice through our podcast.
How do you think about happiness?
Happiness is from within, therefore, setting & accomplishing self-goals is definitely a happy moment. Anytime you can set a goal & accomplish that goal, that’s another positive step in moving in the right direction.
