Life and Work with Christen Westcott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christen Westcott.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Christen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from Cross River, New York. I experienced quite a bit of precipitation growing up, so I jumped at the chance to move to the West Coast and ultimately got my Bachelors in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Southern California (Fight On, Trojans!) You could say that was the first time I, “looked west.”

While I did not pursue a career in journalism, I am so grateful for the foundation I received in writing and communication. I learned how to ask a lot of really good questions, which has been so valuable in my role as a wedding and events planner. Listening to my client’s stories and learning about what is important in their lives really helps to create a day that is perfect for them!

I believe what sets Look West Events apart is the focus on creating a personalized experience for the bride, groom and guests. I try to push creative boundaries and encourage clients to weave meaning into every decision they make.

Has it been a smooth road?
Building your own business is a really vulnerable experience. It reminds me a lot of when I was in the dating world – you’re putting yourself out there and everyone has opinions about what you should and shouldn’t be doing!

When you are having doubts or are feeling inadequate, I think it is really helpful to have those “speed dial” people who can remind you that you are totally capable and super brave for starting your business. If your speed dial people aren’t available at that particular moment, a good alternative is to turn on something inspirational (for me, Veronica Mars) or listen to some empowering music (for me, Taylor Swift’s Reputation Album). Just watching or hearing another young woman fight to get what’s hers is great motivation. I’m looking forward to the day when I can become a mentor to another young woman who wants to break out on her own.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Look West Events – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Look West Events specializes in creating events that elevate love, friendship and life’s milestones. I help my clients plan events that are truly personalized and full of meaningful details. I firmly believe that a client’s only job should be to enjoy the wedding or event that they’ve planned. There’s nothing I enjoy more than handing a bride, groom or special event host their favorite beverage and telling them, “Have fun! I’ve got this!”

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
When I was growing up, my mom would sign me up for all kinds of classes, camps, and lessons. Sports, dance, art, music – she had me do it all! She would always tell me, “I want you to have lots of opportunities.”

She would send me in “cold” to a new activity with lots of kids I’d never met, and I would cry beforehand in the parking lot of the tennis facility…art room…ice skating rink…etc. But then an hour later, I would walk out exuberant and asking to go back again next time.

As a child, I was not always such a fan of these “opportunities,” but as an adult I am so grateful that my mom taught me how to just jump into a situation and be myself.
