Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Zarazua.
Crystal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always loved art. I loved to paint and draw since I was very young and once I graduated high school my interest in photography grew. I dipped into the photography industry and clients of mine began to request for me to do their makeup for their photo shoots. I never saw myself as a makeup artist but I took on the challenge. I did like to play with makeup but usually, it was just on myself! As soon as I bought my first set of brushes and my first few products to use on clients, I was in love! I probably owned a couple of brushes and would use the small applicator “brushes” you get when you buy those small palettes at the store but nothing more than that. It took a lot of practice, a lot of watching other professionals in action, and lots of studying of the color wheel which helped me better understand different undertones and skin types. It was not easy but it was so worth it. The best part was to see how happy and beautiful my clients felt at the end of their sessions. I look back at my work now 5 years later and I can’t believe how far I’ve come!
Every day, there is still something new to learn, new techniques, new tricks and I will never stop learning. Knowledge is so powerful and it can take you so far! I specialize in editorial and bridal makeup and it is truly my passion. It’s an honor to brighten up someone’s day and boost their confidence by amplifying their beauty. I’ve met some wonderful people and other talented artists. My business has grown tremendously within the past year alone. I can’t thank God enough for my family and friends who have pushed me to believe in myself and encouraged me to follow my passion. I would not be here without them. I’m very proud to be a part of this amazing, creative industry and I look forward to what’s to come!
Has it been a smooth road?
I have definitely had obstacles throughout this journey. I’m a wife and mom of 4, I also work in accounting in real estate full time so I have definitely had my setbacks. I learned that it takes a lot of patience and determination to reach my goals and I have not let anything hold me back from it. I like to set small, realistic goals in order to reach my bigger goals. It’s a must to take it one step at a time, one day at a time. Success does not come overnight, it takes a lot of hard work. I would advise anyone who is starting, to be patient and soak up as much knowledge as possible. Learn from other professionals, don’t get offended when you receive constructive criticism – take it as something to help you better your skill.
This industry can be cut throat at times, and it is growing rapidly! With that being said, do not give up, if this is truly your passion, keep going until you make it. You will face struggles, you will fail, but you can’t succeed without taking the risk of failure. I would also highly advise respecting experienced professionals because they have worked extremely hard to get where they are- they deserve recognition and respect. Learn from them instead of feeling overshadowed by them because you will get there one day and others starting, will look up to you also. I would highly recommend to surround yourself with other driven and positive people, they are the ones who will push you and pick you up when you fall. Last but certainly not least, always remember to stay humble and kind!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with CrisJenn Makeup – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in beauty, editorial, and bridal makeup application. For the first time, this year, my work was published in a beauty magazine and I was so proud of my accomplishment. It surreal seeing my work in a magazine that so many people have access to. As of now, I have been published a few times now. I would love for my work to be published in a bridal magazine soon!
I am very proud of how much my business has grown. This year has been a record year for me so far. I love working with brides and bridal parties. What makes me the proudest is when I receive messages and reviews from my brides raving about my work and about how many compliments they received on their wedding day! It makes me feel accomplished and it reassures me that this is what I was meant to do.
Who have you been inspired by?
My mom has been my #1 inspiration and #1 fan. When I was a little girl, she was a stay at home mom and set aside her own goals for our family- my dad, me and my 4 sisters. Words cannot express how grateful I am for her. She taught us to be independent and to always believe in ourselves. She always pushed me to be better, and never doubted what I could do. Not everyone supported me when I first started doing this but she always believed in me. She would encourage me to practice and not give up. She is, without a doubt, the strongest woman I know.
I am surrounded by many other wonderful women who have inspired me in so many ways, it’s hard to just pick one or two. My good friends and fellow creative, Abigail Mejia, Ariana Ortega, Leslie Barajas that without a doubt have been some of the greatest cheerleaders I’ve had.
I have known Abigail since we were in high school and lost contact for a few years. We later reconnected through our passion for makeup industry! We actually both started around the same time and have seen each other grow even if we’re miles apart. She has been such an inspiration for me and has taught me so much. We can always pick up where we left off and I can say she has encouraged me in the darkest times to keep going. She’s a beautiful person inside and out and I’m so proud of her also!
Ariana is an amazing photographer whom I met last year. She has been such a wonderful friend and great motivator, I’m so thankful to have her in my life! She is such a hard worker and I love seeing her in action because her drive and passion shines through, I love working with her and I look forward to sharing a lifetime friendship with her!
Last but not least, Leslie is such a talented hairstylist that I met just a few months ago. I found her on social media and reached out to her about teaming up and working together. I’m so happy I did! She is also such a driven and hard working woman and mother, and she is just awesome. I love working with her and sharing this journey alongside her.
I am so blessed to have such amazing, talented and driven women in my life.
