Life & Work with Kevanna Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevanna Adams.

Hi Kevanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Art has always been my thing since 2005. I’ve moved around different art fields from graphic design to cosmetology but I just couldn’t find my niche. So I gave it all up and went from retail to the hospitality industry. Until one day, my friends and I planned a birthday party, decided to go the cheaper route. I felt like I knew my way around the kitchen enough to make all of the treats so I did just that. They weren’t the best looking, but decent enough to serve to others and they taste great. I really enjoyed doing that so I posted the pictures. Someone then asked me to make treats for them as well. My hobby turned into a small side job. Three years ago, my funds were a little tight, so I found a job to be a cake decorator with no experience. In my interview, I had 15min to decorate a cake. They were amazed and so was I honestly and I got the job! I did that job for a year to perfect my craft and pushed my own business to where I am today!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say that it has been a smooth road only because the cake industry is such a brutal industry. One wrong move and your cake is no good. The only good thing is that a cake can be fixed if your customer is willing to give you that chance. My competition does beautiful work which sometimes can be a little intimidating and discouraging to me. All and all, my loyal customers love my work and my great taste which keeps them coming and I’m very grateful for that!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a home-based baker that specializes in custom cake design. I also create other treats for example Chocolate covered strawberries, Oreos, and Rice Krispies just to name a few. I am most proud of my uniqueness and the great taste in my cakes. What mainly sets me apart from other bakers is that I create memories in my treats that no matter how long ago you had my cakes, you are always going to remember that flavor and the smile that is engraved in them!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Not to compare myself to others. I believe in my work and it rubs off to the world!
