Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Turner.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I learned to appreciate Mother Nature as a child while traveling all over South America with my father. We always had a house with a beautiful garden and trees. I enjoyed gathering flowers for my mother and making little hair crowns with the tiny little flowers I found around the property. My mother has always loved nature and she instilled that passion in me as well. After my father retired we moved back to our home country where we settled down for a few years on my parents’ ranch. These were my best years and memories. We moved to the United States in the 90’s where I finished my education. I worked in the Dallas Design District for a few years where I put my interior design skills into practice. Years went by and I knew that I wanted to work with my hands. I started my career in floral design after arranging flowers for a couple family member’s weddings. I discovered that I was passionate about wedding florals. I was able to bring the principles of interior design into each of my arrangements. I truly love experimenting with color, composition, and texture. I decided to start my business in 2014 and pursue my dream. It took me some time to source the bloom farms, wholesalers, etc. I didn’t have a floral design education but floral design came naturally to me so I took a leap of faith and jumped into the industry.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to where I am at this point in my business venture hasn’t been exactly smooth. When I started I knew that I would have to get some sort of education in floral design so I could discover the style that made my heart happy and find the niche for my brand. I spent hundreds of hours sourcing for a way to take classes online but I couldn’t find the style I loved. The online classes were beneficial to a certain point. I learned the basics of how to process the flowers and to design. I always spent a lot of time looking for educational business classes but the information was very limited. I didn’t have any marketing experience so I had to search for ways to advertise my business. I didn’t have advertising in my budget, to begin with, so I had to be very wise when it came to marketing. I think it was so much harder for me in the beginning because I didn’t have the resources and a way to network and meet people in the industry. I am so grateful we had google.
Vella Nest Floral Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Vella Nest Floral Design specializes in Weddings, Private Events, and Hand-curated gift boxes. Our floral style is an ‘organic free-flow garden style. I am so proud that my company can service the wedding industry by providing a unique style to every event.
For each and every wedding we create custom designs according to the vision of the couple we are working with. It makes my heart so happy to see the end results in each creation I make with my team.
Even though we are still new in the wedding industry what sets us apart is the ingredients, passion, attention to detail, and love we pour into each event.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a relative term. When I decided to start my business I had goals set and dreams for myself. I didn’t know how to start or where to start. I spent a lot of time trying to find the way to meet my goals and make my dreams come true and I still do. Looking back I remember where I started and where we are right now and it makes me very happy and proud how much we have grown. I have so many more things I would like to do and to incorporate in the business. I am working on my new goals right now and hoping to make it a reality in the next two years.
