Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Damour.
Amber, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My interest in photography started with a photograph of mushrooms. My father always loved photography and when I was a small child, he had taken a masterful picture of a cluster of little mushrooms surrounded by beautiful purple flowers. He was at the right perspective so as to make it look like a giant forest. So, when I was in school, I decided to take photography classes just for fun. I studied biology in college and never foresaw that I would one day have my very own photography business.
After years of managing medical practices and nutritional supplement companies, my husband and I were blessed with our first child. It was because of her that I decided my time was too precious and I needed to be my own boss. That was three years ago and I haven’t regretted that decision one bit. Now, I have three little girls, ages three and under, along with a farm full of animals! I am beyond fortunate to have a business that not only gives me the opportunity to be creative and share the joy with others but also to have special time with my husband, children, and animals.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business in a highly saturated metroplex full of super talented creatives has caused difficulty in finding ideal clients. In this market, I feel like you have to develop a signature, recognizable style so that the ideal clients seek YOU out rather than having to constantly knock on doors. In a world where everyone has a camera in their back pocket, it’s even more necessary to set myself apart. So, I have really worked tirelessly to increase my skill and create a style of my own.
The most challenging aspect of my journey has been finding a balance between being a devoted wife and mother and a business owner. It’s so hard for me to turn off the business part of my brain, so time management has been crucial in maintaining my personal relationships. As I have become more efficient in my skill, I have been able to spend more time with my family and friends.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a portrait photographer specializing in senior grad, branding, family, child, maternity & newborn photography. I offer a boutique photography experience for my clients, filled with fun and emotion. I don’t use presets or filters- all of my images are hand edited and meticulously crafted. I am obsessed with vivid better-than-life colors and I’m an avid chaser of gorgeous light. I love showing my clients and fans before & after images that showcase how post-processing takes an image to the next level. It’s always important to capture the image correctly in-camera, but post-processing is where a nice portrait turns into art. That’s my goal… to create lasting art for my clients.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am SO thrilled to announce that I will be opening a studio in historic downtown Kaufman square in July 2019. I will still be doing all of my outdoor, on-location sessions across DFW, but now I will have a little space to call my business home. This is a dream come true and I am so thankful for all of the support and encouragement I have received from my team of family, friends, clients, and fans!
