Today we’d like to introduce you to Amina Ebrahim.
Amina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Being the oldest of four children, my parents placed a lot of faith in me to lead by example. They had immigrated to the US for better opportunities for their daughters. Excelling in school was a standard expectation. Having a competitive nature, I was proud to not only be the first person in my family to go to college, but also become a doctor.
I consider myself blessed to have found my passion early on in life. As soon as I was old enough, I began working for the local eye doctor. Over the course of several years, I progressed from a file clerk to an Optician. With the support of my family and mentors, I became one of the youngest in my class to graduate from the prestigious Illinois College of Optometry.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was married at the age 22, right after my first year of Optometry school. Suddenly, I was balancing an intense school/ clinic schedule, a part time job and a home. Many nights, I would sleep sitting up on the couch with my books in my lap so I wouldn’t stay asleep too long. This would allow me to study for hours on end and stay focused.
Those early years prepared me for my current role of a businesswoman, doctor, wife, mom of two active boys, and a volunteer in the community.
Please tell us about D Vision Eyecare.
Having been in the industry for over twenty years, my goal was to one day have my own practice. With the support of my husband, Acky, we decided to take the plunge and opened our doors in December, 2015. We have a wide selection of eyeglasses and sunglasses for all tastes and budgets within a modern and clean office setting.
Our mission is to provide full scope eyecare for the entire family. To me, Optometry is an art, not just a science. I like to educate my patients about their conditions and my procedures so they can take an active role in their vision and eye health.
Along with providing prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses, we also care for the health of the eyes. Treating patients for their dry eyes, allergy or Diabetes lets me manage the whole patient. If I see both parents and children, it lets me accurately monitor the family health and history. I can guide and treat the family unit by consulting on nutritional advice, computer eye strain relief or specialized lens options for prescriptions.
As a small family business, we pride ourselves in taking care of each patient as an extension of our own family.
Whether it be providing flexible appointment times, or the occasional home delivery, our patients know they can rely on us.
After seeing the alarming trend of children getting glasses at a younger age, we have introduced Orthokeratology lenses for myopia control. These lenses allow children to be glasses or contact free in the daytime through the use of custom lenses they wear while sleeping.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I fondly recall our family road trips where my sister and I were responsible for planning the routes to our destination. Since this was before the internet days, we’d manually highlight the map and calculate miles to destinations and direct our dad to stop for sights along the way.
Being a planner and looking past the horizon has always been in my nature.
