Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Farris.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Lane Florist, opened in 1947, was original to the outdoor shopping mall- Snider Plaza. Owned by three generations of the Lane family, I had the opportunity to purchase the store in 1999. I acquired two other florists over the next three years and joined them all together.
It had always been my dream to own a flower store, but the work I did in finance, living and traveling abroad and training in flower design was the biggest gift in preparing me for the joys and demands of this business. I feel blessed to see the varieties of flowers arriving daily from all over the world and meeting new and working with existing customers to bring flowers to the events of their lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
Owning a small business along with its triumphs has its many challenges. Every person on staff plays a vital role in its success and growth and yet it is impossible to ignore the human aspect of the demands on their lives. We have all watched the happiness of marriage and the value of family, as well as, the pain from loss that inevitably comes to us and to our customers. These times have tugged at our hearts and allowed us to reconsider how we can better provide support. Other times the unexpected occurs like the loss of power, due to a car accident, on a February 13th one year challenging us to make Valentine’s arrangements by flash light. The constant upgrade of technology and the excitement of working with a 72-year old facility can test faith.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lane Florist story. Tell us more about the business.
Lane is full-service florist known for the quality and long-lasting value of its flowers. Shipments arrive daily from all over the world; which allows us to provide a variety of fresh offerings. In addition to floral, we maintain an assortment of unique gifts including imported chocolates and candies, hand-made candles and beauty products, and exotic orchid plants.
Many of our customers enjoy taking advantage of our daily special, from 4:30 pm and all day Friday and Saturday, we offer half-price on all cut flowers; which guarantees our flowers quickly find a home. As for what sets us apart – A customer’s review maybe says it for us: “The designs are exquisite, but most important is the genuine care that I receive every time I walk in the door.”
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Flowers are showing up in new and unexpected retail locations. As the internet expands the horizons of shopping, fiscal stores are working to reinvent their product offerings. I see flowers continuing to provide a soft offering to the retail environment. As those products reach the consumer, the longevity and quality may not create or sustain a future purchase. It is up to businesses like ours to constantly educate the consumer and strive to offer even better substitutes for an impulse buy. We must make it worth the effort to take an additional step to call a florist, rather than buy from a non-specialty provider.
