Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Oliver.
Angela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My photography journey began a year after I had my first baby. Like many new mothers, I obsessively documented all of his milestones, but I was doing so mostly on my phone. I wanted to learn how to take better photos but I never once thought this new journey would lead me to opening a photography business and turn into a dream job!
Growing up, I was always into the arts. My whole life was dedicated to music. I was a pianist from the age of 6 and I continued through college by getting my Piano Performance Degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. I taught private piano and clarinet lessons in my home studio and also taught music classes at various private schools. This was my journey. This was the path I trained my whole life to do.
After the birth of my first baby boy, I put music on hold and chose to stay home to raise him and experience all the milestones I didn’t want to miss out on. Through the course of his first year of life, I struggled taking photos on a DSLR and mostly used my phone. When he turned one, my husband upgraded my camera, and from that point forward, I became determined to learn how to use properly in manual mode. I read every educational article I could get my hands on about things such as the exposure triangle and editing techniques. My poor son unfortunately was my constant test subject. As my knowledge and skills grew, I realized the endless possibilities on the creative outlet I could achieve through photography. I knew that this is it. I want to document life.
For another year or so, I remained a hobbyist. I photographed family and friends but was nervous about becoming a real legal business. As I began documenting life more and more, my photography passion lit a fire in me and I wanted to share this with others. You can never go back in time and capture a moment that has already passed. Our life is made up of so many tiny fleeting moments and these moments become our story. I’m so excited to capture my family’s story day to day in an artistic way, and have the ability to look back on these memories as we grow. I am truly honored when others choose me to capture their life stories.
Has it been a smooth road?
No path is ever truly smooth and growth cannot be achieved without some bumps along the way. Our struggles can either consume us, or it can drive us. Having 3 kids now makes the business aspect more challenging. Whether it’s finding a babysitter or my internal struggles of being away from them when they are only little for so long. Luckily I have a supportive husband who helps talk to me about the business side when I need help, and he is a great father to our children when I am away documenting other families.
It’s been a decade since I was a small business owner teaching music. There are so many new things to learn in this industry, but it has been an enlightening experience so far. I’m excited that even with the bumps along the way, I have a ‘job’ that I love.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Angela Kim Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
My business, Angela Kim Photography LLC, offers a variety of photography services. I focus a lot on the family since that is where my passion began with documenting my own. I want my clients to feel like they have their “forever photographer” so I document many milestones and occasions. It all begins with beautiful life growing in the womb. I love documenting a precious bump, as mothers we all cherish it so deeply. When baby is born, I offer hospital sessions, posed and documentary newborn sessions either in my home studio or in a client’s home/nursery. As the baby grows oh so quickly, milestone sessions are available to document all the new things he or she is learning, from lifting their head for tummy time, sitting up and clapping their hands, to standing and smashing a cake in their face to celebrate their first year of life.
I have always loved the sky and sunsets well before I got into photography. Now, I incorporate that love into all of my outdoor sessions. I shoot mostly only around the golden hour, which is just before the sun sets. I am pretty adamant about documenting around this time frame because it creates truly magical and one of a kind photos that you can’t quite get during mid-day sun. Our precious memories aren’t made up of saying “cheese”. They’re made up of laughter, silliness, and sadness. The calm and quiet, the loud and rambunctious. I capture all of these moments – The moments that truly make up our life stories that mean everything in the world and is worth being told.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The photography industry is growing at such a rapid pace. With the amazing improvement of camera phones and DSLR’s being more easily accessible, the need for professional photographers has changed. I’m not saying the change has been for better or worse. It has just changed. However, I know there is, and will always be, a value for the skill, talent and vision that professional photographers offer to their clients and for that I am thankful! I am forever grateful to all of my amazing clients who support small businesses such as myself!
