Meet Anthony Semler of Apollo’s Auricle Studios in Keller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Semler.

Anthony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A few years ago, I met a friend who would help spark this journey. He heard me singing one day and from then on insisted that we jam together. He was a professional bassist and at the time, I was convinced that I had nothing to offer him. But after several months of trying to get together, I finally agreed to invite him over to jam. And almost immediately, it’s like magic was created. I sang like I had never sung before and we flowed together, creating music out of thin air, right there on the spot. It was amazing. He proved me so wrong.

After that, we started getting together all the time. Then, after several jam sessions together, we started inviting over other friends and musicians. Before we knew it, we had a solid crew of musicians showing up regularly to these free-form jams. We called these jams, “The Isness”, because that’s what we all came to experience – the spontaneous creation and happening of it all.

I fell in love with these jams and wanted to capture these precious moments, so I invested in some recording equipment. I got all the mics, the interface, the software, monitors, you name it. And for a while, the Isness went strong.

Eventually, life happened and we stopped meeting so regularly to jam. And I was left with endless hours of amazing recordings and enough equipment to start my own recording studio. And that’s exactly what I did.

In the fall of 2019, I filed the paperwork to officially form Apollo’s Auricle Studios, LLC with my business partner and best friend, Clayton Garrett. Since then, we have worked with many local artists like Jaylon De’Shun, Averi Burke, Carley Bearden, Honest, & 1221, to name a few. It’s a dream. We are so excited for the road ahead!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh, absolutely not! The road has been anything but smooth…

The biggest obstacles are, always have been, and always will be my limiting beliefs, my self-doubt, and my self-destructive, self-sabotaging behaviors & mindsets.

But see, that’s how I know I’ve chosen the right path in life. Because pursuing music requires me to confront my shadow and integrate it. It calls forth my higher self and encourages growth in all areas of my life.

Obviously, running a studio allows for my musical creativity to grow, but it also nurtures my communication & networking skills, my negotiating skills, computer skills, hardware & software proficiency, marketing abilities, visual art abilities, my capacity to work on the fly, to find creative solutions, to encourage my clients while they are at their most vulnerable, to maintain my physical, mental, and emotional health, and to express my truth and my authentic self all the time because there is no “ON/OFF” switch.

See, it’s like…I feel like the reason so many people out there aren’t pursuing their passions is because once we decide to dedicate ourselves to one thing, we quickly realize that we have to become proficient at about 50 other things! It’s like a hydra in that way, and that can be super intimidating.

If you want to make music, you gotta learn how to use a computer. You gotta learn the software, the ins and outs, not just the basics. You gotta learn music theory. You gotta study song structure & arrangement. You gotta have an understanding of sound frequencies in order to mix and master. You gotta make sure you’re backing up all of your projects and keeping your files well organized. You have to know what companies out there make the best software for instruments, plug-ins, sounds, etc. And that’s just barely scratching the surface.

So yes, there are many many obstacles, and all can be overcome if you make a commitment to show up everyday, fully present, appreciative and ready to grow.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Apollo’s Auricle Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
Apollo’s Auricle Studios is a holistic recording studio. What that means is that in addition to providing the essential services that most recording studios out there offer, (live recording, music production, beat making, mixing, mastering, etc.) we also offer distribution, marketing, visual graphics, a collaborative community and most importantly, artist development.

Now, the artist development is not yet a service with dollars and cents associated with it. It’s kind of just what we do here. We help people grow. We help people find themselves. It’s in our nature.

In the coming months, we will be rolling out an artist development course online and in-studio. The course is currently in development, so expect to see that around summertime!

Some of the clientele that comes through the studio are absolutely devoted to the musical path. There is just no stopping them. Whereas other clients are admittedly what I’ve come to recognize as “fair weather artists.” Which means they’re around so long as the getting is good, but they’re not really in it for the long haul. The dream for this artist development course is to give our clients a deeper sense of who they are, where they come from, and what they stand for. So that no matter if you are a devotee or just passing through, this course can help you discover and nurture your authentic self. And no matter what you decide to do after being a client with us, you will be able to take what you have learned and show up for life as your authentic self every day.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I can’t say that I’ve been perceiving things through the lens of “luck” at all, actually. I certainly recognize synchronicities, though. And there have been some situations, some meetings, some opportunities that just cannot be explained by any normal framework of understanding, but I still believe that it runs much deeper than luck.

I believe that when you devote yourself to your dreams and you make the commitment to grow and shed the layers of yourself that are holding you back, the Universe responds. You may call it something else. You may call it God, Krishna, Allah, Source, Creation, Existence, Potential. I believe when you make a promise to yourself, you are also making a promise to whatever higher power you recognize, even if that just means “the nature of existence.”

Every synchronicity and every success I have experienced, I attribute to and give thanks to God.

It has been a very long journey for me to get to this point in my spiritual life… That story can be saved for another interview.
