Today we’d like to introduce you to Arbara Rankins.
Arbara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
This all actually started by accident… SORTA. While I have always had a deep love of music and people, I never would have dreamed to be personally involved in the music industry in any way.
Long story short, I had a small child with special needs. During his time in the NICU, all we did was listen to music, sing and read books. Later we discovered that during therapy which was painful for him, music calmed him. I began my search for all things music to have on hand for such occasions. Thanks to social media I found a local Dallas musician (who is also an educator) who posted a few videos and my son was hooked.
I eventually contacted him & went to a performance. Shortly after I traded my business and office experience for piano and drum lessons for both of my sons. We noticed that business progress was being made and decided to collab his music with my business and the rest is just an unbelievable adventure of growth and making wonderful connections with some of the best musicians in DFW.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Its had a few bumps! Since I don’t have a music or music industry background its a process of constant learning. I personally started taking vocal and piano lessons, so that I could understand just a little of what my peers have to deal with.
Another thing that has been a challenge for ME is that a corporate business mind and a creative musical mind can look at the exact same thing and see totally different results. While I have worked with people from all walks of like this one has taught me so much that I couldn’t have expected.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
So MAM is an indie record label headed up by Myles Tate III. It started with him in Chicago with the intent to record and release his own original compositions and arrangements. He had 2 Jazz focused bands already, The Myles Tate Alliance and Experience. We have since added two more, Tailor Made (party band) and Citizens of the French Quarter (Jazz Fusion band).
We have an education-focused segment Universal Language, where MT3 teaches music lessons on various instruments from beginner to advance. Now my part… I since starting have found that many independent musicians take on everything by themselves. So I began to offer my business assistance and a Virtual Business Assistant. I have now grown it to encompass Business and Life Coaching, specializing entrepreneurial startup, work-life balance and spiritual alignment. While MT3 and I are in business together, we don’t get to work with each other very often!
We have created a small community of exceptional musicians, thinkers, and movers… and we are all working together to advance in our own way/right in the industry. In a society where selfishness is the new normal, we are working on build together. Sharing ideas, lessons learned, reteaching from different perspectives, changing mindsets and most importantly training our children to build so that what we are doing can last for generations to come.
What were you like growing up?
I was born and raised in East Texas so a little country! I have always had a love for learning. Classic nerd… (my current Kindle library has over 13k books). I am the baby of a HUGE family. So I am ALWAYS around people! I love to talk, and that was usually reflected on the love notes sent home by my teachers on my report cards. I did great in speech and debate in high school!
