Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Briscoe.
Brenda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My interest in natural health began in college when my granddad would tell me what herbal remedies to use to avoid going to the campus infirmary. Later, I worked at a health food store to put myself through grad school. My parents died of cancer when they were both 53 years old, and I made a decision to live the healthiest life possible. I became an herbalist in my early 40’s and continued to study health and nutrition to help other people as well.
My step-daughter with scoliosis sought my advice for pain relief. I recommended some herbal combinations that helped but also looked into pain relief modalities. I discovered Bowen Therapy. When we learned that it was only offered a great distance from where she lived, I was led to invest in learning this modality so I could work on her when I was with her (she lived about 45 minutes away from me).
Much to our elated surprise, her posture and pain level improved quickly. She began telling her friends about it and sending them to me for help. Without trying, word was getting out about the “miracle” of Bowen Therapy, and I was busier than I ever expected to be during this “practice” season. I decided to obtain a massage license so that I could actually charge for my work. I’ve taken much more Bowen course work since then and have made it my career for 20 years. My passion is to help people in pain toward their healing journey. I practiced on my own for many years, then discovered and connected with Living Well Dallas in 2012.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have not had a big budget for marketing, so it has mostly been just word of mouth. Somehow, my early years were very busy. After 9/11 and the economic downturn, however, people seemed more hesitant to spend money on things like bodywork.
The most difficult part was educating the public on what Bowen Therapy actually is. In my attempt to get the word out, I taught at 5 different massage schools in the Dallas area in hopes that, with more therapists, the work would become more well-known and more hurting people could get help. I also gave presentations to support groups, networking groups, rec centers, Central Market, Living Well Dallas, and other places in order to make people aware that this therapy even exists.
To date, there are probably no more than a dozen practitioners of Bowen Therapy in the DFW Metroplex, if that. This therapy is well-known on both the East and West Coasts but not so much elsewhere. I am not discouraged though. It took 40 years for chiropractic to become a household word where, when it is mentioned, everyone knows what it is.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Brenda Briscoe Bowen Therapy story. Tell us more about it.
I am part of a fantastic team at Living Well Dallas, the largest and most comprehensive integrative healthcare facility in North Texas. I practice a hands-on modality called Bowen Therapy. Those who are familiar with Bowenwork, love it for its quick, profound and long-lasting resolution to core problems. They also like that only very gentle pressure needs to be applied in order to get the remarkable results that they are used to receiving.
I specialize in remediation of migraine headaches with a success rate of about 90%. I am also known for my work with fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, and neck and back pain, Other conditions I’ve had success with are carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ imbalances, and concussion. Many times, I add LED light therapy to the client’s session for an even more profound effect.
My goal is to work toward a permanent resolution of the underlying problem. My clients get their physical issues resolved and then they send others.
The thing that I’m most proud of is that I still have clients that started with me many years ago. Their pain issues resolved, but they come in when they are reinjured or have recurrences. And they’ve continued to send their friends and family.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not much of a believer in luck. Rather, I like to think that we have underlying paradigms that we may or may not be aware of, and these subconscious thoughts run the show. Through prayer, soul-searching, and some great emotional release techniques, I’ve discovered some of the underlying beliefs that have held me back in my personal life and business. During this journey, God has opened new doors of opportunity that have unfolded beautifully to bring me into abundance and a new perspective on my life.
This past year has probably been filled with the most positive changes in my entire life. I have moved into a wonderful home environment. I have recently reached one of my financial goals, which is debt freedom. My business is growing. And I’m actually taking on some exciting new roles at Living Well Dallas, which were totally unexpected.
By this, I mean that I am collaborating with a functional medicine doctor to bring Living Well Dallas some brand new services that you can’t find just anywhere. These include BrainTap (brain entrainment), NeurOptimal (neurofeedback), and Frequency Medicine Therapy.
I love broadening my experience and adding to the richness of our clients’ and patients’ healing journey.
