Meet Carmen King of Code Name: Mama in Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen King.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Carmen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I live in Carrollton with my husband and our one and half year old son. My sister, Lauren Taylor lives in Arizona with her husband and 3 kids. When I became a mom, I was asking her where she went to connect with other moms. She then began to tell me of all the click that mom groups have and how it’s few and far between to find a diverse mom group. So, together, we started Code Name: Mama. We wanted somewhere to connect with other moms without feeling like it was another job to do so. We started just as an IG community which later grew into shirts, blogs, and a mama meet up group. We have multiple outlets that way we can reach as many moms as possible. We want to connect with, support and encourage other moms, as we live motherhood out loud because it looks different for everyone.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Now, we don’t have all the money in the world so that does limit our resources but we have been blessed to have somewhat of a smooth road so far. We also really try to stay mindful of why we started CNM, as a ministry not as a business so the extra is just for fun.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Code Name: Mama – what should we know?
So, Code Name: Mama is mom community that offers 5 ways to connect. 1. Our Cute original Expressive T-shirts and nursing tops with sayings on them that only moms can Identify with. 2. Lauren’s blog 3. Carmen’s vlog, we wanted to do 2 separate forms because everyone is different, some people like reading some people like watching. Now, we haven’t gotten a consistent schedule down for either of them yet but we will, just hanging in there lol 4. Our mama meet ups. We come together with other moms to do fun activities with our babes. No requirements, no applications, you can sit with us any day! 🙂 Right now, we only do them in the DFW but we will be launching them with Lauren in AZ next year. And lastly #5. Our IG. Now, we know having an IG isn’t something different but we use IG to connect with moms from all over. Some of our most connected moms on IG are from Canada, Alabama, and North Carolina.

We are so proud to be this intricate because it allows us to stand out as not just another t-shirt company, or not just another blog, so on and so on. We truly care about the betterment of fellow moms and we get to benefit from the interaction as well which is the best part. We are also engaged with the DFW community. We have partnered with a teen mom ministry to bring them in and interact with our older moms so they can see their moms just like the rest of us. We want them to feel supported and not less than just because of their past choices.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think character, quality, and passion is what will drive you to succeed in business. You can have a great business Idea but lack one of these or even all three and it not succeed. Here’s why, when we are doing business you character goes before you, no one is going to do business with a liar, cheat or a drama queen. When you do have people buying things from you, ESPECIALLY when it’s not in person, the quality received is a reflection of your character. When you don’t have passion then you won’t be motivated to keep going when things don’t go as planned or to work the hours that don’t fall between the 9-5.

“Motivation will almost always beat mere talent” – Norman Ralph Augustine

Also, a key piece to keeping your sanity when running a business is having people who are also running a business around. For me it’s My cousin Erik, who has a business called Crown Holder Marketing, he’s always shown me the grind needed to achieve your goals and the other is my friend Debra, of Little Muffincakes, she makes sure I’m thinking of all the ways I can succeed. And then of course family. Having this support system helps you keep things in perspective.
