Today we’d like to introduce you to Cece Cox.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cece. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In some way, shape or form, I’ve been an advocate for the LGBTQ community and persons living with HIV for more than 30 years. When I moved to Dallas, I didn’t think I’d stay, but I fell in love with the people and the LGBTQ community — we get stuff done! My work background includes journalism, photography and law, all of which merged with decades of nonprofit experience to lead to my current endeavor as CEO of Resource Center, one of the largest LGBTQ community centers in the country.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve learned a lot from the business experiences I’ve had, from being a reporter and photojournalist to the time my knees actually knocked together at my first hearing in front of a judge. When I look back, even the challenges that felt dreadful turned out to be great learning experiences and are sometimes just plain hilarious.
And, once I became a parent, I got a lot better at knowing what was important and what was not worth the stress.
In my current job, re-shaping an agency that did a lot of things no one knew about was a challenge. Re-starting a capital campaign that had stalled was a challenge. Advocating for LGBTQ people in the state of Texas is a challenge every day. But, the business of business is solving challenges, identifying opportunities, and leveraging your resources to create solutions and results. Resource Center has an excellent staff, dedicated volunteers, generous supporters, and quality programs and services. Those assets keep us moving forward.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Resource Center is a nonprofit that has served people in North Texas for 35 years. We are a trusted leader that empowers the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) communities and all people affected by HIV through improving health and wellness, strengthening families and communities and providing transformative education and advocacy. We serve more than 60,000 people annually through advocacy, programs for youth and seniors, mental health counseling, health and social services for individuals living with HIV, STD treatment and testing, HIV prevention, transgender health services, and more.
We have an outstanding staff of nearly 60 and 1,100 dedicated volunteers. We are known for outstanding programs, services and advocacy for the LGBTQ and HIV communities over 35 years. We operate the Nelson-Tebedo Health Clinic, the Simmons Foundation Health Campus and a new, 20,000 square foot community center that serves as a beacon of inspiration for our community.
I’m particularly proud of the relationships we have built across North Texas and the country. We have remarkable and passionate collaborators and partners who are integral to our success in serving the community.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was both playful and bookish. During the summer, I loved to run around my neighborhood all day until I had to show up for dinner, and I also loved reading dozens of books at the local library. I have a mischievous streak — I might have been called a “ringleader” by the principal and teacher, following some practical jokes in sixth grade. I still don’t understand why the adults were so twisted.
My favorite way to spend time is with family and friends. If hiking and food are involved, that’s even better!
