Today we’d like to introduce you to Clarissa Burton.
Clarissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
During my time in Graduate School, I worked with many teen programs such as Upward Bound and MHMR Youth Rehabilitation Center. I assisted High School students in tutoring, completing college applications, college admission essays, and financial aid applications as well as Drug/Alcohol Prevention and Rehabilitation.
Upon graduating with my Master of Science in Social Work: Mental Health & Substance Abuse, I became employed as a High School Transition Counselor, helping teens create a pathway to the future career they desired. Being on the High School campus and spending time with students, I became aware of the barriers they face daily as a teenager.
This led me to writing a book, dedicated to helping students grow spiritually, mentally, and socially. The book is called Just Too Young: A Teen’s Guide for the Journey through High School and Beyond, published this past February 2019. My vision is to transform the lives of young adults by inspiring them to dream big and reach their goals.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been smooth or easy, but it has definitely been worth it. There are days where I have students who are eager to go to college or start a new job and are successful at doing so. But there are other days where I have seen students choose a different path where the outcome has not been favorable for them.
As a counselor, you can tend to get so involved that you want to help every student and give all of yourself to them. Sadly, doing that causes burnout, so I have had to successfully learn self-care. Writing the book was no smooth road either, as it took me almost three years to complete. I had the idea to write the book in late 2016 – early 2017. I did not successfully complete the book until late 2018 – early 2019.
There were thoughts of doubt and failure that kept me from finishing it initially, but in late November 2018, I was actually driven to write the book even more, and finally completed it. It is one of the greatest accomplishments I’ve ever had.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am an Author. Also, outside of my normal career on the High School campus, my business partner (Jaymi Davis) and I offer College & Career Readiness Consulting for teens and their parents.
We specialize in ACT/SAT tutoring, Subject-based tutoring, assistance with College Applications, College Admissions Essays, Scholarship Search, and assistance completing Financial Aid Applications.
What sets us apart from others is our drive, unique abilities, and affordability compared to paying big companies such as College Board or Kaplan.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as becoming better than yesterday. This is with our processes, quality of work produced for our clients, and the usage of our time. If we used our time and resources better today than yesterday, I call that a successful day. And I believe each successful day gives us more credibility as a successful business.
