Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Johnson and Nick Quintero.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dana and Nick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Both of us started with art backgrounds in fashion, apparel and product design. We began getting invites to be in a few art shows in Dallas so we started making a lot more of our personal stuff. Eventually, we decided to throw our own art shows and set up at vendor markets so we knew we needed to keep making more and more art and products.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We face the same challenges of businesses our size but we have had some unexpected situations thrown at us too. Trying to predict how our customers will buy things (ie sizing, colors, etc) is always a challenge that can leave us with random assortments. No two items ever sell the same, even if they are in the same category.
Natural disasters delay shipping, artists cancel on shows last minute or a windy day can ruin your entire table set up at an outdoor venue. The weirdest situation was probably when we thought we were on track for our goods to ship by a certain date and instead found out our screen printer’s shop burned down over the weekend.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fresherthan story. Tell us more about the business.
Fresherthan is a curated shop, online and mobile, where we design everything that we sell. We’re most known for throwing pop-ups and art shows in Dallas. We hand pick the artists involved, only work with retailers that we love & spend a lot of time creating new or exclusive items and themes that make our events feel like a party with a unique experience so you want to come back for more the next time.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Bad luck in life has inspired our Life’s Tough Club mini-collection and our superstitions prints, but we like to make it humorous. We don’t think luck has anything to do with the business side of things since we like to spend a lot of time making plans and figuring out what’s best for us very meticulously.
We are a little superstitious, though. Thirteen is our lucky number. Even the fixtures we have custom made for our pop-up booth were made with a 13-degree bevel (shout out to Kenneth!)
