Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle O’Kane.
Danielle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been brought up in a highly entrepreneurial Household, with all of my parents (I have step-parents too) running their own businesses. I have a very strong creative pull and during my studies, I found that makeup was the platform through which I could freely and passionately express myself. After working in the cosmetic industry and on multiple African Fashion Weeks, music videos, performances and photoshoots, I was still itching to create something of my own.
At a Festival, I noticed a gap in the market. What if it was possible to have a mobile makeup studio, something like a food truck that could pop up and help people everywhere for any occasion? And voila The Blush Bus was born: Makeup for everyone, everywhere for everything: Proms, Weddings, Halloween, Birthday Parties, Bachelorette Parties, Festivals, literally anything and everything. The Blush Bus is my passion project. It’s a part of me. I brought it here all the way from South Africa. It is an empowerment tool. I want to teach young children that their dreams are never too big and how to take those dreams and turn them into a business and help give them the tools they need to make their dreams come true.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh no, definitely not! I had multiple struggles… Each day was a new lesson learned and I had to overcome the fear of not being successful. I built the Blush Bus myself with a friend. I had no idea what I was doing but I knew what I wanted and how I wanted it to look. With the help and support of my incredible parents and friends, it somehow came together. Each day came with new lessons. You have to be open to feedback and criticism and use it to help you grow. You also have to keep yourself motivated and inspired every single day, which is not always easy. My Makeup Artistry is my skill and is what I lean on to carry me through to success every single day. I have to cultivate my skill to keep me moving forward. It’s the reason I ventured on this big adventure to begin with!
We’d love to hear more about Blush Bus.
I am a professional Makeup Artist and am most known for my theatrical makeup creations. I specialize in prosthetics, bridal, editorial, body painting and beauty makeup. The Blush Bus is an extension of my skill. It’s how I am able to take my skill to people everywhere and provide them with an unforgettable makeup experience.
I am most proud of the fact that I get to do what I love every day and that I took the risk to make my makeup dream come true. I get to inspire and empower everyone around me, showing them that no dream is too small or too big. Makeup is a hot topic right now, but what sets The Blush Bus apart is our level of artistry, kindness and the fact that it’s a freaking makeup bus!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My family is super close, but we live all over the world. I grew up in South Africa and anytime I got to travel was my favorite. I used to talk to absolutely everyone on the plane and loved hearing how different each person’s life was. I was such a regular traveler that the air stewardesses would let me serve bread to the guests on the plane and I even got to sit with the pilot who would escort me himself to meet up with my family in whichever destination we would be in.
