Today we’d like to introduce you to Demarcus Thurman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I was big on technology from cameras to computers. It wasn’t until I finished my M.B.A at Texas A&M Uni. Commerce when I realized I wanted to pick up photography. I always enjoyed shooting pictures and was always that guy at family reunions and gatherings who would take the group pictures, but never pursued it professionally until 2017.
In late 2017, I got my first camera from my dad and started teaching myself and watching tons of YouTube videos. Then at the top of the year, I got a call from a friend who said “hey how serious are you about this photography thing?!” and I responded I plan to make it a full-time job in the future. He informed me that he was starting a blog site on Instagram called @DallasWallStreet and wanted my brand to be the media team for it.
At that moment, I thought to myself “whoa things are getting real”! That was kind of the moment where I knew I had to push myself harder to learn and faster. I started doing more photo shoots, learning from other local photographers like @RenellBell and just taking it all in. Now I have two videographers and another photographer under my brand, and we’re working hand in hand with @DallasWallStreet to give Dallas the spotlight it deserves.
Just to give a little information about @DallasWallStreet, it is a platform to promote local businesses, singers, rappers, comedians, artist, news, and more. There is also an internet radio station we do in partnership with POWER214.COM (@Power214radio_media) every Thursday 7-9pm called Dallas WallStreet Radio bringing you to live interviews from past guests like Dorrough, Tiara Yvonne, Kitty Millian, Lil Ronnie (DSR), and more.
It has been an exciting journey, and I feel like I still have a ways to go before I can just feel like I’m satisfied, because this is an exciting business and I’m constantly learning new things. I love being able to capture images that make people happy and want to show it off to the world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a rollercoaster of a journey because photography is not cheap and any photographer will tell you that. I am on camera number three and switched from one brand to another and with that comes buying new lenses and etc.
But in my honest opinion, it’s all worth it and will pay off when you really enjoy the craft. I plan to continue pushing myself and get better with every shoot.
Please tell us about Shutter King Images.
Shutter King Images (@ShutterKingImages) started with just me and the dream of running my own company and working for myself 100% one day. I have not yet taken the leap to doing photography full time just yet, but I do have two videographers and another photographer working within my brand.
As a company, I am most proud of being able to be versatile and work a variety of event from birthday parties to the Harvey Martin Gala, Michael Crabtree Crab 5 Foundation youth football camp, and Brandi Maxiell’s Teal Tea Party.
I believe what sets me apart is working hand in hand with @DallasWallStreet and just being a genuine peoples person.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
To be honest, I would not change one thing, because I believe everything that I have been through and will go through is what’s going to define me as one of Dallas best photographers.
We go through things for a reason, and they mold us into who we will become. It’s up to you how you react to each situation and if you will come out on top or not.
