Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Dodson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Donna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I chuckle a little bit when I’m asked where and how my business got started. For me, it was a hobby and stress relief from a full-time nursing career. After a long hard day of healing people, I would emerge myself in healing a different kind of wound. The wounds of time, wear and tear on old vintage furniture. It was therapeutic, and I swear it has saved my life and mental health on many occasions.
I painted everything in my home, literally! Then I ventured out to painting for the public. Others would bring me their Grandmother’s old furniture, and I would give it a more modern look that would fit into their style. It was an emotional labor of love for me.
Preserving my Grandma’s memory in her old furniture was a no-brainer. The word got out, and my business took off. Years went by, and soon I knew that this would be my full-time business. In 2016 I retired from my 33-year nursing career to pursue my passion.
I no longer paint furniture for the public, but teach online classes to other furniture painters that want to learn the business. My life is full. The Art of Painting Furniture and The Creative Makers Tribe.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting any new business is always a struggle and not just the business side, but the fear of failure. It’s REAL! So many times I was ready to just throw in the paintbrush.
I know that I am extremely critical of my work and never quite feel the perfection that I strive for. It took years and many self-help books, motivational speakers and a business coach to get me where I am today in my business.
Does my business run smoothly today? Let ‘s just be totally honest. No. It’s always a struggle but in a good way. I wouldn’t change a thing! As I sit here in my studio office and type this out, I smile. Because I know where I’ve been and I know what my future holds. #womeninbusiness #entreprenuer

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have several team players that help Do Dodson Designs run smoothly, but one that has made the most impact and my biggest fan is my husband. Quitting a full-time job to paint furniture was insane! But I knew in my heart that I could make it work. He has supported me 100% all the way.
Everything from late night paint runs, repairing furniture, loading and unloading furniture and building my paint studio. It was the only way he could get me out of his garage. 🙂 I could not have done it without him.
