Today we’d like to introduce you to Emonne Markland.
Emonne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Leave Your Beauty Marked started in July 2015 with a desire to inspire women to live on purpose and make a difference through community service outreach events.
When I first started, I met with a team of friends and family to share the vision and ask if they’d be willing to help. From there we planned monthly “Coffee Connect” meet ups to build community among women in DFW and support local coffee houses. It was amazing to see women from all over the metroplex, many who were new to Texas, get connected to one another and build lasting, fruitful relationships. The coffee connect movement even spread to Puerto Rico, where we now have a group!
The vision grew more as we planned and launched our first conference, 20/20, with the purpose of empowering women to have renewed vision of their identity and purpose. If I can be completely honest, this was the most challenging step of faith for me. So many thoughts swirled in my head: What will the venue be? Will people even come? How will we get the money to do this? I battled a lot of fear and insecurity to birth that dream. But I knew God had spoken this to me: “Give Me a room, and I’ll fill it.” So I prayed every week for months on end, during the planning and preparation stage, and things began to line up. We even found a free venue! The money came through. The details all lined up. Looking back at that conference, I see how several other organizations and conferences were birthed as women found the courage to step out and accomplish the vision they saw in their hearts. I’d like to encourage other women to know that your dream is always connected to others if it’s truly a God-dream. It’s always bigger than you. So don’t give up or wait for the fear to subside in order to step out. It will be worth the push, and you won’t break. You’ll be stronger and others will be inspired.
Today, after some major life transitions in my own life, we are in the process of launching some new outreaches and initiatives. I’m excited about what’s to come!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As shared in the previous section, fear was a major hurdle to overcome along the way. You never know how your vision will be received by others, but you have to be willing to walk on water no matter what.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Leave Your Beauty Mark – what should we know?
Leave Your Beauty Mark is an organization committed to empowering women with resources and opportunities to leave their mark in their communities and around the world. We believe that every woman has a unique gift that can make a difference for generations to come, and we exist to champion them every step of the way. Through empowerment events and media resources, as well as service opportunities, our goal is to see a generation of women thriving with purpose, active in service and celebrated in a community of like-minded leaders. We aim to help women recognize their vision, voice and value, and go out and change the world!
I think what sets us apart is the coffee connect meetups and community outreach efforts. You don’t see a lot of women empowerment efforts collectively giving back through outreach. I always enjoy when we combine to two and do “Coffee Connect with a Cause” where we collect items to give to local nonprofits such a school supplies, gently used clothes, etc. during our coffee connects.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband, family and close friends have been detrimental to helping get LYBM off the ground. They have always been there to champion the cause, pray and encourage me to keep going when things got tough. At the coffee connects and conference, they were willing to push up their sleeves and do any and everything to help see the events come together. They are strong in areas where I am weak. And as a leader that is so important.
Also, Jordan White and Valeriana Chikoti Bandua were two friends that truly invested their time, prayers and support to the vision of LYBM in the launch year. Since then, they have started their own organization and are impacting the world in a powerful way.
This Fall, after some major life transitions in my own life, we are in the process of launching new outreaches and initiatives to serve the DFW community and abroad through an innovative digital platform. Our Fall launch event is Saturday, September 15 where we will share more information and have an opportunity to gather with other women who are passionate about spiritual growth and making a difference in the world! Keep an eye on our website and instagram for all the details! I’m excited about what’s to come!
