Meet Erin Blair Gobin of Erin Blair Makeup & Hair Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Blair Gobin.

Erin Blair, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
People are always surprised to learn that I didn’t always want to be a makeup artist when I grew up, and I wasn’t even a big makeup lover when I fell into this career! And that really is what happened – I fell into this completely by accident. My background is actually in graphic design and marketing. I went to school with the intentions of becoming an art director for an advertising agency, and my first job out of college was as a junior art director for the largest agency in Houston and I couldn’t have been more thrilled. That lasted about six months until I had my first experience with corporate cutbacks. I then moved on to a series of marketing jobs where graphic design was one of the many hats I wore, in addition to less creative, more analytical marketing tasks, and I picked up a little freelance graphic design work on the side.

Then in 2004, I moved into a new apartment building in downtown Dallas and made fast friends with a makeup artist. Before long she asked me if I had any interest in learning a little makeup artistry and assisting her on the weekends. I was up for learning and making some extra spending money sounded good, so I took her up on the offer. And to my surprise, I had a real knack for it. Turns out makeup artistry isn’t all that different from graphic artistry. Different medium, different tools – but same concepts!

Before long, I was working side-by-side at weddings with her every Saturday, and she began to refer work to me when she was booked. I did wedding makeup like this on the side for about five years. Met a great guy. Got married, had a kid… and then became really overwhelmed. I realized I needed to take something off my plate and that I was so much more passionate about my “side hustle” than my full-time career. We began making plans for me to take my business full time. I built a team of talented artists that allowed us to take on more weddings and larger bridal parties. We began to invest more in training and also stepped up the business side of our game. I was finally able to quit my marketing career and take my artistry business full-time about 3 years ago and I couldn’t be happier with where we are today!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The life of an entrepreneur is never without struggles! Probably the biggest struggle for any “mompreneur” is maintaining a work/life balance is still something I struggle with daily. I always feel like I’m either really on top of my business or really on top of my mommy game, but it’s so hard to do both well at the same time.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Erin Blair Makeup & Hair Design story. Tell us more about the business.
Erin Blair Makeup & Hair Design is a team of talented makeup artistry and hair styling professionals, with myself being the principal artist. We specialize in special event makeup and hair styling, primarily weddings, as well as corporate events and video, and we pick up our fair share of print work as well. We’ve also recently begun to offer more education, holding private makeup lessons in our studio on a weekly basis.

However, we are more than just a team of talented artists. We are true professionals. We understand the importance of a timeline, contracts, communication and customer service, it’s for that reason we have been the recipient of many industry awards, including being a 3-time Vendi aware nominees from the American Association of Certified Wedding Professionals. I’m very proud of the reputation we have built in the industry as a company that offers both exceptional artistry and professional service.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say meeting my makeup artist friend all those years ago was most definitely a stroke of fate, luck or divine intervention. My career would be completely different today had we not met!
