Today we’d like to introduce you to Fabiola Melendez Velez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico (where your sun tan is your OOTD everyday). I moved to Texas about three years ago, it was a decision made by me so I could have a better future. Without no one or nothing holding me back I said goodbye to my lovely family, precious beaches and warm weather all year long. I decided to take this journey just has a “temporary” thing… Three years later, I have made Texas my home.
First two years weren’t easy, I had to adapt to the language barrier and culture. I cried, I was homesick everyday, I would FaceTime my mom 24/7, I went through a face of anxiety and panic attacks almost every night, not finding peace (even though I had everything going for me) I still couldn’t take my anxiety away. The beginning of this year 2019, I had to make a change. This couldn’t keep controlling me anymore, I had to be more than my anxiety! I prayed, detoxed myself from people, jobs and insecurities that weren’t letting me grow. So I decided to take photography has a hobby, my boyfriend at the time, now fiancé WHOOP WHOOP had gave me a Nikon camera so I could distract myself taking pictures. I started photographing my friends and family just for fun, never really thought of making a business out of it. But my friends kept pushing me to open an Instagram and promote myself and so I did. I am thankful for the people God has put in my way to help me get out of that dark place I was in with my anxiety, taking photos and finding new spots to create memories gives me so much joy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Honestly, the only thing that has being kind of hard is that there is so much talent in the DFW area and since I’m still a “rookie” it’s kind of intimidating. Everyday is an obstacle you get to learn from. But overall close friends that have small business with photography have been really helpful as well with tips.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in nature outdoor photography , I don’t have a specific group of people, mostly I do couples, family and individuals portraits.
I think my caring for them to look at the photos while we are in session and let them be open with any pose or location they prefer is something that sets me aside.
What were you like growing up?
I wish my parents could answer this! Hahah, I was a very spontaneous young girl, always a leader type, mature for my age and very hard-worker. I loved to be around my family and my dogs.
