Meet Gisselle Baba of Real Food For Dogs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gisselle Baba.

Gisselle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and came to the US in 2013 to work with Kimberly-Clark as a Global Senior Brand Manager. Driven by the challenge of growing an idea from scratch, I ended up starting my own business.

In the summer of 2015, I combined my passion for a healthy lifestyle and my strong belief in the power of food with my love for dogs, and began nourishing the concept of a freshly made, 100% natural dog food. I got certified as a Companion Animal Nutritionist and in 2016, I started cooking for my dogs and my friend’s dogs out of my home kitchen in Uptown Dallas. After a year, and a lot of ups and downs, Real Food For Dogs is on its journey to achieve its long-term vision.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road of entrepreneurship is challenging. You struggle emotionally, physically and financially, and learning to go through it without losing your passion and the sight of your vision is the biggest obstacle to surpass.

My day to day is an emotional rollercoaster of uncertain, rejections, failures and successes. You have to become resilient –from both the good and the bad.

Your body and brain get exhausted. I began doing everything by myself, from research and development to cooking, cleaning, selling and delivering. A huge milestone for the business is learning to delegate and accept help.

I had to make a lot of financial adjustments to make it through. I have taken several jobs on the side from teaching ballet, to salsa performer, dog sitting and Airbnb host. You have to become creative, humble and realistic to thrive.

My keys to overcoming the struggles have been: endurance, perseverance, self-confidence and flexibility.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

I am very proud of the results I see in my dogs, especially in those with health issues like allergies, skin and coat conditions, kidney problems, among others. Their improvement is notable after 6-8 weeks of eating real food. Real food is essential to preserve health and maintain the ideal body weight.

What were you like growing up?
In my mother’s words: “She was very independent and liked to do things on her own and her way. She found pride at standing out in everything she did and was responsible and a perfectionist. Her strong character and persistence made me take her to ballet class before she was 3. She liked to make up games and tell stories of magical worlds to her siblings. She matured at an early age, before 18 she was driving and graduated from high school, got her first job, became a newspaper writer and traveled alone. She managed to be a top student while dancing professionally and always had clear priorities and goals. She was an animal lover and brought home most of the pets we had. One day she arrived with 7 orphan kittens she found on a roof and fed them with needles. She always liked to eat healthy and became a vegetarian while still a teenager”.
