Meet Hailey Duncan of The Salon Professional Academy Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Duncan.

Hailey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I received my Esthetics license in 2012 and spent the first year of my career specializing in facial waxing and brow shaping with Benefit Cosmetics. I then went on to receive my Esthetics Instructors license and have been teaching in the Esthetics Industry for the past 6 years from working in cosmetology schools to hosting trainings on classic and volume eyelash extensions. With 5 years experience in eyelashes, I am trained in volume and classic lashes. I have also received national recognition for my eyelash work receiving awards such as Lash Artist of the Month for Excellence in Eyelash Extensions from Lash Affair by J. Paris.

My lashes have also appeared on television shows such as America’s Got Talent. I have worked around the country including Dallas, New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Phoenix and Denver assisting industry leaders including celebrity hair and makeup artists and representing the Esthetics industry. I am also a Certified Master Spray Tan Technician with Norvell Sunless Spray Tans and I am trained in micro needling, facial and body waxing, brow shaping, contour body wraps, classic and volume eyelash extensions, airbrush spray tans, derma planning, and specialized facials including advanced chemical peel procedures and advanced machine facials.

Currently, I am working as an Esthetics Instructor at The Salon Professional Academy Dallas, and raising my 8-month-old son, with another baby boy on the way!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not! There have been many obstacles that I have had to overcome both internally and externally. I originally started out wanting to be a nurse. After 2 years of school, I realized that nursing was not like Grey’s Anatomy and I needed to make a change. I completed my degree in Biology and then followed a recommendation of a friend who had just completed an Esthetics program.

I would say that was the first obstacle that I encountered in my career, was just making the decision to do something that seemed unconventional to my friends and family and was virtually unheard of. If I had a nickel for every time I have been asked what an “esthetician is” or my personal favorite courtesy of my chiropractor “do you work with horses?”.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Salon Professional Academy Dallas story. Tell us more about the business.
The Salon Professional Academy Dallas beauty school programs are designed to train students for much more than passing the state boards. We develop the entire salon professional with great technical ability, business & marketing training, and the guest handling skills that are in high demand by top salons and spas.

We believe that pursuing an education in the professional beauty industry is the first step to discovering a career filled with creativity and endless opportunity. Our goal is to maximize your artistic potential through a program that teaches not only the latest techniques but also proven business and marketing strategies.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Years ago, I randomly stumped upon an article about the British psychologist Richard Wiseman, who studied luck and the conscious mind. He actually has written a book all luck called The Luck Factor. He found that people can actually increase their luck by a conscious effort. It was a very interesting theory and ever since then I have had a “conscious mind” for luck in all aspects of my life and I am a firm believer in this theory.

For instance, once a month for the last few years I have found money in random places from a $20 bill in the parking lot of a movie theatre, $5 bill stuffed in the massage chair crease at Bed Bath and Beyond to a $10 bill floating through the air and landing on my windshield at a stop light (I’m not kidding!) Once, I was even riding a carnival ride at The State Fair of Texas and a $1 bill came floating down from the sky within my reach.

All of these occurrences happened after I had read the article about the theory of luck. I do not believe that people are “lucky” I believe that it is a conscious effort to obtain this luck and people can develop techniques that enhance their own good fortune.
