Today we’d like to introduce you to Hamiz Mushtaq Awan.
Hamiz, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan. I moved to the US in the fall of 2014 to attend Southern Methodist University. With no family or friends in Dallas, my transition was tough. The first few months tested me emotionally and physically but I had so many people who helped me through. Life as an immigrant can be uncertain, challenging and shell shocking. The US government calls us legal aliens and you really do feel alien in this place. It is the people around me and the work that got me through it all.
It has been a roller coaster ride since 2014. It feels as if 10 years have passed since I landed in Dallas because so much has changed. I have met thousands of new people, worked for 3 different companies, lived in 4 cities, changed my address more than 10 times, attempted to start numerous ventures, been successful in starting multiple organizations, made several partnerships, built an entire network from the ground up, successfully allocate capital in many assets and across states, taught hundreds of students, and the list goes on.
I am hoping to use my story to inspire others who may be deciding on making a similar transition or are doubting the things that they can achieve. I am one of the youngest, if not the youngest, principals for any investment companies in the area. I am part of a business where experience and age are hard prerequisites. No one ever trusts some 20 something year old to invest their money. But through the hard work of our team, we have been able to overcome this in a significant way.
Has it been a smooth road?
One of my favorite quotes is: “a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” I kept this in mind when things got difficult. Starting my life from scratch, coming to terms with the culture shock, managing all the ventures with a full course load in a challenging college degree, being away from family, managing finances are some of the things that made the transition challenging. But I was fortunate to be surrounded by friends, a host family, professors and others who helped me through the process.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Plutus21 is an alternative investment manager that aims to make quality non-traditional investment opportunities available to all investors. The investment community functions as an exclusive club for the top 10% of the country while everyone is left picking up the crumbs after these investors. We want to change this dynamic and encourage responsible financial investments from an early age.
In order to achieve this vision, we need a team that is new and progressive. The average age for the management of investment firms is probably in the 50’s while it is in the 20’s for Plutus21. While we are young, we have gathered around the vision and pool our resources to provide the highest level of investment opportunities.
We win the trust of our investors with our sincere work and strong results instead of appearances. If you want a manager who can meet you in shorts and flip flops but still gain your trust, we are the people for you. We do not designer suits and offices in high-rise buildings to make our point. No frills, only performance.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I won the lottery when I decided to attend SMU. That was because SMU was located in the DFW Metroplex. In 10 years, the DFW will be a hub for organizations like ours. There is a great inflow of talent and resources to the city which is significantly reducing the frictions of starting a business.
