Meet Heidi Hood of Feeling Fanciful

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Hood.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Heidi. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I began my journey in the character entertainment industry in the summer of 2016. I had recently played Mary Poppins in a musical at Family Music Theatre in Lancaster, and one of my cast mates introduced me to the world of “professional princessing.”

I was instantly smitten with the idea and began freelancing and booking gigs for various entertainment companies around the metroplex. I soon realized that I had a vision for a princess company that I couldn’t find anywhere else, and decided to create my own opportunity for girls of all ages to have their dreams come true through Feeling Fanciful.

I started as the sole performer for the company, developed a business plan, legalized the company, laid a foundation for the vision, branding, and systems involved; and it wasn’t long before I was princessing regularly myself for parties and events throughout the metroplex. Inevitably, I soon had too many parties to perform by myself, and I opened the company to hire a very specific talent group of performers.

Within two years, I went from not even knowing this industry existed to discovering my dream business, building a team of 10 employees, and booking events for nearly every single weekend of the year. It’s been quite the humbling journey, and I am so grateful for the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

The greatest thing to me through this business is proving that everyday dreams really do come true, and to inspire girls of all ages to unlock their potential and become everything they’re made to be. I have been through many seasons where hope and joy were hard to find; so being able to give that gift to other girls like me has been priceless.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve had people tell me it looks like the world is at my feet and that it’s like I walk on water or something, but nothing could be further from the truth. This journey with Feeling Fanciful has been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. The only experience I had had in business was as a private music studio owner for four years before I started this company. I’ve always been a performer first and then an entrepreneur at heart, but I never pursued business as a course of study.

I have a degree in Voice and a Theatre minor and a lot of experience with teaching and directing children, which have served me well in delivering the services of this industry; but when it comes to building and running a business, that is something I have had to learn through trial and error – which is a very humbling and difficult way to learn. I’ve never made so many mistakes in my life, it feels like.

I’ve had to learn to let myself fail over and over again in order to refine the business and allow for healthy growth. Thankfully, I recently hired a business coach to help me, and that has been one of the best things I’ve done yet! Another thing I battle is the fact that I’m a 25-year-old woman, and it might just be in my head, but I feel like sometimes clients and other business owners don’t take me seriously or belittle me because I’m not “supposed” to be doing all the things that I’m doing at this point in my life.

That is sometimes a hard pill to swallow, but at this point, I’ve accepted the fact that I’m a pioneer and I don’t need the world’s approval for my journey or to believe in what I’m fighting for. No one will ever believe in your dreams as much as you do yourself. But you have your dreams for a reason, and it’s important to fight for them, even if you have to walk alone.

Loneliness has definitely been a large part of my story, which is why I was so happy to hire my fellow performers on our Fanciful Team. They’ve made a world of a difference in supporting me and helping me realize I’m not alone along the way. I’m also blessed with an amazing husband who supports me fully – and I wouldn’t have made it this far without him!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Feeling Fanciful is a premium princess party company that brings authentic character portrayals of everyone’s favorite princesses (such as Cinderella and Rapunzel) to special events and birthday parties around the DFW metroplex. We are known as the company that does not just “dress up and shows up,” but we have created one of a kind party experiences, and bring the complete package to you!

Every performer has a party assistant to ensure things run smoothly for them and their guests, and each performer brings professional song performances to their party. When it’s story time, our princesses do not simply read a storybook to the children but tell the story as though they stepped out of the storybook into real life. Our performers are committed individuals who train monthly with us in order to hone their skills and bring the most engaging performances wherever they go.

In addition to the high-quality packaging, preparation, and talent we provide, our company also provides streamlined booking services. So basically, anyone can go online to our website and see what’s available and book their party from there without having to wait for us to let them know what’s available, send them an invoice, or whatever! We’ve made it extremely easy and pain-free to invite a princess to the party.

Our costume and quality wigs are high-end and constantly being groomed and brought to perfection so that our princesses look like the real deal! We are all about “preserving the magic,” and pay attention to every detail so that the little royals make believe all party long – we even park around the corner so that the children don’t see their princess getting out of a Ford Fiesta and instead can imagine the carriage she rode to get there.

Our streamlined bookings, authentic character portrayals, professional singing, high-end wigs and costuming, signature packaging, intense preparation for each event, and attention to detail completely set us apart.

Another thing that I’m so proud of is our Fanciful Team. They work together so well, train hard, and we give them everything they need to succeed at their events. We compensate them well and listen to their concerns and suggestions. We have a great community in our Fanciful Team, and I’ve been so blessed to work with such gems in this business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
It absolutely is! There is such a high demand for what we offer, and DFW is a wonderful community of generous and kind people that we are so honored to entertain. We are especially blessed to bring what we can to Ellis County, as there is no princess company at all in this area. We are honored to be the first.
