Today we’d like to introduce you to Lenzi Holmes.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lenzi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My mother was a professional rodeo photographer. Truly I did not have ANY desire to do this as a business when I was growing up and in college. My dream was to truly be in an agricultural related field/be a professional singer, and then a mom and raise my kids. Growing up as a farmer’s daughter and being very involved in the Texas FFA (Future Farmers of America), yes sounds cheesy but it is the organization that gave me the confidence to try anything and the connections to get started.
I am blessed to say I actually have worked in the Ag field, cut a CD, and fulfilled my dreams. I actually met my husband when we had the band going on, Lenzi Lenaye and the Greenhands. We traveled thru Texas and Oklahoma playing what is called “Red Dirt Music”. A very Miranda Lambert feel to it. There came a time when my, now husband said, “You can go to Nashville and make it, or stay here and I will propose one day.” I knew in my gut that he was the one, but so was my dream. After a long night, it was the first time I ever really prayed to God. I asked that if this wasn’t to be, that He would take it a part piece by piece and don’t let it hurt. Literally, 5 members of the band quit over 5 weeks and 2 future venues BURNED to the ground. I knew that was God. That was the day I said “Ok, whatever you want me to do, I will do.”
Over the next few months God brought amazing people into my life that were speaking, teaching and guiding in ways I had never seen. In August 2012, I made the decision to follow Jesus. Does that sound “religious” yes, but it wasn’t. It was a relationship. Moving forward a few months, I needed a job! I signed on to be a newborn photographer at a local hospital for a company. I loved training people due to my FFA days, so I worked my way up about to become a national trainer. The Lord slammed a door and it broke my heart. The next day my husband went and bought me my first camera. A Nikon 3200 and a 50mm lens and said, you can do this. Later the next week I went to a women’s retreat in San Antonio, trying to figure this whole part of my life out. As a sat with my bible, trying to find the answers, it popped up. Verses of Honor and Glory to our Lord. That was the moment I knew, I would name this company H&G Photography. Giving all Honor and Glory to Him. Ten minutes later, a fellow camper sat next to me in tears about how she couldn’t afford anything for her wedding (not knowing I was even interested in photography) And the Lord told me, Bless her. I didn’t know what that meant but I responded with telling her, I have only shot newborns in a hospital but if you will let me I would love to shoot your wedding for free because I am being told too. Ever since that day I have been more busy than I could have dreamed. I have no schooling when it comes to photography. I just have a GREAT support system of photographers, soaking up anything they teach and figuring it out for myself, but always bringing it back to God. Yet the purpose of H&G Photography.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ohhhhhhh yes! I didn’t even know how to START my own business! Everything from paying taxes, what to charge, what is MY style, making sure I don’t compare myself into depression against others, all the different equipment, finding out which type of photography I wanted to do! ALL of it has been hard and yet rewarding at the same time. I am not a sugar coat girl. This year has been the HARDEST of the 4 years I have been in business, and I will never quit learning but I know the Lord has let me walk thru seasons of trials to learn to lean on Him and not my own understanding.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As stated before, H&G means Honor and Glory Photography. Anytime I have a chance to talk about Jesus and share I do! It is actually one of my number one questions! What does it mean? I think the Lord knew I would need that door to open to talk to people about Him! In my opinion, I don’t “specialize”. Which sounds crazy, I know! My colleges would probably tell you weddings! Which is funny because it’s the one thing I swore I would NEVER do! And look at my portfolio now! I love capturing all levels of life! From maternity, to newborns, to weddings, to even yes funerals. I have been honored to shoot a marines funeral and talk about move you to tears. I love being able to capture truth. I am most proud of what the company represents. How I am not a “normal” story of knowing from day 1 this is what I would do, going to school for it. All I was, was a girl obedient and listening to the Lord and move when He said move. What sets me apart is a few things. Most of my regular sessions are back to clients within 48 hrs. Weddings are normally back within a week and my prices are affordable. I don’t have a desire to be the Next Big Thing. If it happens, then great. But if not, that’s ok too. I am the photographer that has been able to pray with nearly all of my brides before they walk down the aisle and calm their nerves. Even in the ceremony….I shoot and then pray, because no matter what I can do with a camera for my brides and families, praying for them is the BEST I can do. There is a trust there and a bond that surpasses all.
What were you like growing up?
I was a farm girl to a T! I grew up in the small town of Era, Texas! Yes! Graduated with 22 people in 2005! All of my family went there. So I come from a very small, everyone knows your business town. Now living in Fort Worth feels like a totally different world! I was getting up and helping milk cows from age 7 and then running my own Swine farm by the time I was 18. Livestock showing is what made me who I was. It taught you to be competitive but humble. How to work hard even after dark. How to build relationships that last a lifetime. When I was 18 I was elected as a Texas FFA State Officer. 10 seniors going into college were selected and I was over the DFW area. I was able to attend college and speak to kids all over the state about agriculture and the benefits of joining the FFA. FFA taught me it was ok to fail, because if you did, it means you tried. It taught me public speaking skills that I completely attribute to me being able to deeply connect quickly with my clients. Now I am a city girl with a cowhide in my master bed room! I will have to put my own words into practice one day of how FFA is even for city kids because my child will be one!
