Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Johnson.
Jacob, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Human trafficking caught my attention back in 2014. Since then, I have been obsessed with creating simple ways for everyday people to help tackle this issue. I found (and continue to find) incredible organizations working to end trafficking. I simply want to help them do more of what they are best at by providing the funds and awareness they need. To accomplish this, I needed to create a business that could offer something of true value– a product people could fall in love with and feel good about buying. Perhaps most importantly, a product you’ve used before and could afford. Then, we could funnel portions of our revenue back to trusted nonprofits that we vetted.
Candles fit the bill on all accounts. I found myself in the candles business. No, I did not grow up dreaming about wax and fragrances. But I do see candles as an incredible product which, in our case, can lead to big social change. For that reason, I love candles.
I founded Calyan Wax Co. in May 2017. A company founded to serve others and put an end to human trafficking. A company that cares deeply for its employees. A company that stands behind its craft, consistently pursuing excellence in our products.
These first two years have been incredibly difficult, yet so eye-opening and exciting. We have constantly been expanding our distribution to stores all over the U.S. who believe in our mission and want to offer our products to their customers. Most recently, we’ve gotten to team up with Whole Foods in the Southwest region! We are more optimistic than ever for the future! New & better products, a new facility (shop tours coming soon!), and incredible employees that are some of the hardest workers I know.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Just like any startup, we’ve had our challenges. Learning how to scale a candle manufacturing process has been one of the hardest. Soy wax is hard to work with. Raw materials are sometimes inconsistent. Our little shop (that we will be moving out of later this year) has struggled to stay cool during the hot summer months. Thankfully, we have kept moving forward, constantly problem-solving as a team. We always find a way to make it work.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Calyan Wax Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
We craft soy candles that give back financially to our trusted nonprofit partner, Traffick911 (based in Addison). 5% of our revenue (not profits– big difference) is donated to Traffick911. So far, we’ve been able to donate over $33,000! We are super proud of that and know its just the beginning. We are fueled by the stories of young people being rescued from a life of abuse and brought into a life of freedom and hope.
Our social mission is worthy. Our products are crafted well, with quality materials that are safe for your home. And we care about our customers, deeply. We are here to serve you well.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe God blesses the efforts of those who serve Him. I have seen His hands in the business countless times. I lean on His power to grow Calyan instead of luck. All the credit of our current successes belongs to Him. I am simply working hard, working consistently, and hopefully working smart. And throughout the journey, asking Him to move in BIG ways.
