Meet Jacoiya Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacoiya Brown.

Hi Jacoiya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Denton, Texas. Moved to Garland in 2016 and since I’ve been back and forth in the Garland/Mesquite Area. In 2019, I became so unhappy with my career path… something had to change! Then, I was working at State Farm as a Claims Adjuster. One of the best jobs I had, just wasn’t something I wanted to do career-wise. I decided that I was ready to end my career with SF and dive headfirst into the hair industry. I called my mom up and said “I have X amount saved up, I’m putting my two weeks notice in and enrolling myself in cosmetology school”. Her response was “if that’s what you want to do, DO IT!” From that point forward, I have not looked back since.

I became a Licensed Cosmetologist beginning of this year 2021, right out of school I opened up a salon suite in Mesquite, TX. I’m now a full-time Braider/Stylist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, honestly, it has been a smooth road. I’ve of course had some struggles along the way such as building clientele.. but I stepped out on Faith, I’ve been consistent and remained focused on my end goal and it has been the absolute best decision I’ve made thus far! I would not change absolutely anything!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a full-time braider and that is what I currently specialize in. I am known for my Knotless Box Braid, at this point I can do that style in my sleep. LOL! I am mostly proud of my growth within a short timespan… from when I started up until now… a MAJOR difference. Practice, Patience and Consistency is key! What sets me apart from others is I take pride in “HairByCoiya”… I genuinely love my clients and try my best to take care of each and everyone of them on EVERY visit. I’m always open to constructive criticism and learning new things… I truly believe you have to be open to those two things in order to grow in the hair industry.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I played basketball and played two years of college basketball. I’m the goofy, always laughing one out of the pack. I grew up with my oldest sister, whom I played most of my HS basketball yrs with. That’s my best friend, I would say “twin” but she hates when I say that. LOL It’s so funny to me that I’m a licensed hairstylist because in my younger days, I wanted to be a Nurse or Lawyer. I took a totally different route. Lol!
