Meet Jessica Hughes of Hughes Marketing Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Hughes.

Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a family owned business, my dad owned a drugstore, and my brothers and I started working there at a young age. My father was an entrepreneur, and both my brother and I have always had it in our blood. As far as I can remember, I was always doing something entrepreneurial. I remember being about eight years old and making crafts and selling them to my friends. Or knocking on doors in the neighborhood selling tickets to my magic show that I was having in my backyard.

I started Hughes Marketing Solutions in 2011, a little over seven years ago. It was born out of my desire of being an entrepreneur and my passion for marketing. After running very successful campaigns for MTV, The Art Institute, The Miss Universe Pageant and serving as Director of Marketing for Xyience, the official energy drink of the UFC, I believed I had the creative skills and determination to start my own company.

Definitely a little naive to owning my own business, I approached Management at my job, gave my two weeks’ notice, and asked if they would be my first client. Surprisingly, they said yes, and Hughes Marketing Solutions was formed, and I was thrown right into the trenches of being a business owner. Being able to use my knowledge and expertise to market companies and individuals in order to get the exposure needed for their products and increase company and individual brand awareness is a significant component of HMS philosophy.

Being a woman and owning a successful marketing company is very crucial to my desire to empowering young women to pursue their dreams and not be intimidated by naysayers or obstacles they may encounter. Marketing is a tough business and being able to succeed and be an example for young women to look up to is very important to me.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenges were that I needed to learn and develop new skill sets that I had never even realized I needed to know in my line of business. I never realized at the time how many hats I was going to have to wear from finance to sales, to operations- you name it.

Also, I realized that managing a team in corporate America and rallying under-paid freelancers in a startup are two extremely different challenges, and I needed to treat it differently. I have had the opportunity to challenge myself in ways I probably thought would never happen. Nothing could be more gratifying than that.

Please tell us about Hughes Marketing Solutions.
HMS provides outsourced Marketing Services for small to mid-sized businesses. We offer a broad selection of services to meet their marketing requirements. Our services include email marketing, social media, guerilla marketing, advertising, tradeshow management, branding, public relations, and special events.

Whether it is building awareness in your community or strengthening your position as the expert in your field, Hughes Marketing Solutions will put together a plan of attack that will produce measurable results. Using techniques that are specifically designed for our clients, we implement marketing strategies that target their particular niche and engage their audience.

Hughes Marketing Solutions understands the importance of distinguishing their clients from the competition through aggressive and targeted campaigns in order to reach their unique market. We create partnerships between my clients as well as myself, promoting a conducive environment that contributes to a successful outcome beneficial to all.

By making our clients partners and treating them as the experts they are in their fields, HMS has been able to produce campaigns that have led to company growth and increased brand awareness for our clients. The success of our clients is a driving force of the campaigns that I create and put into action. Developing those campaigns, implementing the marketing strategies and then witnessing the growth is fulfilling and encouraging to me as an entrepreneur.

The thing that sets us apart is that we always provide top-notch customer service. All customers have expectations of great service and will not put up with poor response time. Unexpected occurrences seem to happen a lot, and our lives get crazy, and it’s easy to make exceptions and excuses, but I go out of our way to stick to this- even in those difficult times. We are small, but my mantra is to provide extraordinary service.

I am very proud that I decided to follow my dream and start my own company. I am glad that I was so naive and I just did it. I think if I knew what I knew now, I would probably second guess myself. I am an entrepreneur at heart, and I love what I do. My newest project that I have been hired to do and I am very passionate about is the DFW Kids Directory Summer Camp Expo.

DFW Kids Directory, an online and print local resource directory, hired us to produce and market their camp expo that is taking place on Saturday, February 23rd from 10-2pm. This event allows parents and caregivers in the DFW area to seek options to keep their children enriched, engaged, and entertained the whole summer and into fall.

They will have the chance to meet face-to-face with more than 40+ local and out-of-state summer camps, summer activities, family exhibitors, and vendors. I am passionate about this project because I’m a parent of 2 children and I know the stress that comes with planning their summer schedules. Here is a link to the event: www.dfwkidscampexpo.com.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Thinking about this question has reminded me of how lucky I am to have so many precious childhood memories. It’s hard to pick just one! In all of the ones that come to mind, I am surrounded by family. I only hope that my kids can one day say the same!”

Two memories popped into my head. The first was walking the New Jersey boardwalk with my family after swimming all day in the ocean. We ate boardwalk fries, pizza, and ice cream and played carnival games until we couldn’t keep our eyes open any longer.

My second fondest memory of my childhood was having my brothers and the neighborhood kids in the backyard; doing the slip-n-slide, eating popsicles, and running through the sprinklers, while my Dad barbequed.

Two simple memories, but the physical time that my parents spent with me meant so much, especially since I am the youngest of three children. Time with my parents was something I always treasured!”
