Meet Jessica “Jake” Tafoya of The Mod Labb in Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica “Jake” Tafoya.

Jessica “Jake”, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I can’t exactly pin point where my love for the industry sparked, but if I could recall a brief memory it would have to be, watching my mother get ready in the morning. Her vanity smelled of sweet fruits mixed with the dull scent of hairspray. I wanted to be just like her, as flawless and fierce. She was radiant and had a glow that sparkled when she walked into a room. As I grew older, my love for the industry flourished. I was eventually promoted by friends and family to be in charge of getting everyone ready. The “transformation” became an addiction, like a drug I couldn’t live without. That addiction, and the birth of my son pushed me to pursue a career in cosmetology, I enrolled at Ogle North Dallas and found my place behind the chair. 3 years out of school in 2013 I had the opportunity of turning the keys to a place of my own, the home in which I call The Mod Labb. 6 1/2 years later here I am, a mother, entrepreneur, mentor, and of course still a master colorist.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth would be a total understatement. More like a drive through the rocky mountains in a Ford Focus about sums it up. Starting and building a brand from scratch is no easy task. Going from 1 employee to 12 is a blessing…if you know how to handle a group of women whose menstrual cycles have all synced.

The Mod Labb – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Mod Labb, represents modern change, with a dash of chemistry and sprinkled with creativity. We tailor customized color and cuts to fit each individual guest and their lifestyles, from moms to models, boss babes to mod babes. Young and aged to perfection.

oh and… Ever heard the term “brows speak louder than words?” well, we specialize in brow shaping as well.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Watching my team flourish. From the moment they join the team. We test them, challenge them, then watch as the break through barriers, and out climbs the artist inside…taking risks, testing limits, it’s purely organic and beautiful.
