Today we’d like to introduce you to Joellen Randall.
Joellen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started making jewelry when I was 16. A friend’s mother owned a bead store in town and she taught me how to make necklaces and earrings. I fell in love with how I could work with my hands while being creative. That year, I made my homecoming jewelry and started having customers at the coffee shop I worked at request custom pieces. When I went to college, my hobby fell off to the side, and it wasn’t until I was 30 that I picked it up again. I had taken a metalsmith class a few years before that, but I didn’t really start making jewelry until the summer of 2018 when I made my first pair of the Smoky Quartz earrings followed by a pair of Aqua Aura Quartz earrings for a friend. Soon, I signed up for Artsgoggle and got my first wholesale order. Since then, I’ve expanded into several local stores in Fort Worth and Virginia. Now, I’m getting ready to teach my first jewelry making class in July and hopefully will be making this a regular event for anyone interested in learning more about jewelry design.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been many challenges and teachable moments on my journey as a designer and business owner. I am a full-time Graphic Designer, so anytime spent making jewelry or promoting my business is done in my free time after work or on the weekends. But to be honest, it brings me so much joy that it doesn’t really feel like work, and I love being able to connect with my customers one-on-one or through social media.
I would also say that keeping on top of expenses– invoicing and keeping track of inventory at the stores that sell my pieces– has been a bit of a learning curve. I’ve been lucky to have a lot of entrepreneurial friends who are willing to guide me when I need it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Minx and Wild story. Tell us more about the business.
I own Minx and Wild, a handmade jewelry company. I work with crystals and fine metals to create unique pieces for the modern woman. I believe in the healing properties of the crystals, so I always incorporate the metaphysical descriptions of the crystals with each piece to promote healing in the individual wearing it. A lot of times people are drawn to certain crystals not fully aware of why that is, so I think it’s fun to educate them and see if the meaning resonates with them.
I’m most proud of putting myself out there for my business. I am a true introvert so I tend to hide behind the scenes, but since I’ve started Minx and Wild I have been putting myself out there to meet new customers and connect with different businesses for unique opportunities that will push Minx and Wild further out to the public.
I think I’m unique because my designs come from what I find to be timeless or classic. Anything I make has to be tested by me and something that I will wear frequently. I try not to give in to the pressures of what the fashion industry is doing or whatever fad is popular at the time.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t think luck has been as big a part of my life as manifesting has been. I’m a firm believer in setting intentions and putting them out there for the Universe to answer. One New Moon, I wrote a journal entry that changed my life: I put down my intention to get a wholesale order for my business. The next day, I received an email from a business asking me if I’d be open to doing a wholesale order for their store.
And whenever something doesn’t go my way, I just know that it wasn’t meant for me at that time and that something better is on its way. I can’t let disappointments get me down because there is so much to be grateful for with Minx and Wild.
