Meet Josh Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Phillips.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Josh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After completing my Honorable service as a US Marine, I moved my family to Texas to begin our next steps in Life. My wife Sue-Anne has been an amazing support. We meet in the Marine Corps when stationed together in Parris Island in the Marine Corp Band. We have three amazing kiddos… Zach, Alyssa our new bundle of joy Aubree.

I still play drums professionally and thankful for the carrier I have had and continue to have, However, part of me was missing. There was more than I could offer in the art world. Being a creative person, I wanted to pursue a life in the arts and later discovered a passion for photography which quickly became my medium of choice.

I’m a late bloomer to photography but fell in love with the ability to capture images that I hope to speak to people and encourage them. I have started to also dab in the video world. My approach using elements of design in a clean and minimalist way, help keep my photography focused on the subject(s) and the importance of the story being told.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth … not so much but rewarding for sure. Anytime you start later in life with a family it makes things harder and takes a little longer but I would never trade my experiences for anything. My struggles make me who I am and give me an outlet to be a help to others.

I’m not the best business-oriented person and finding out that is a big must to be successful in any business. This has probably been the slowest and most frustrating part for me. The more you focus on the business side the creative side of you diminishes. It’s learning to balance the two and continue to be creative even on the jobs that may not be the most inspiring and exciting.

For me, It’s about relationship… Doing life with people is so important… Its less about making more and more money and more about loving on people. EVERYONE has a story good and bad. I’m just happy to meet new people and be a part of their lives in hopes to make a positive mark on them even if just for a moment.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Well, I’m a photographer… I specialize in commercial and editorial work. My work mostly consists of portraits and headshots but plan on introducing some of my personal work which is more capturing elements of design and things that just keep me exploring.

There is so much beauty in the world if people would just slow down and see what’s going on around them. I love capturing people and telling their story through photos. Again I love people and most proud when I capture an image, and my subject lights up.

I believe everyone is beautiful and we are all made for a purpose. To help someone see how beautiful they are inside and out is amazing. Those are my most proud moments.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Sounds cliché but my family means everything to me. I would gladly give up everything for them. The beautiful thing is I don’t have to because of their love for me and support. I have a beautiful wife and mother to our three amazing kids. Zach – 16, Alyssa – ten and Aubree – six months. Who knows maybe adopting could be in our future.

My proudest moments was when I married my wife and took Zach as my son and the birth of our two girls. My wife and I have been through so many major struggles in our time together. The fact that we hung on to each other against all odds is truly a blessing.
