Meet Josh Schambeau

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Schambeau.

Josh, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always wanted to be a cowboy so my mother made a pair of vinyl chaps and a sheriffs vest with a plastic star for me to play in. My grandmother leased land to a real cowboy named Jim and every time I saw him pull in, I would put on my chaps and vest, my boots and hat then strap on my cap guns and go follow Jim around while he took care of the horses. One day, he gave me his worn out farrier chaps and that sparked a fire that would never go out. To me, the real leather chaps meant I was a real cowboy, The smell and feel of leather, the sound it made flapping around my ankles shouted out “a cowboy has arrived” and I wanted more.

I was about six-seven when I got a DIY leather kit to make a wallet (which I still have) and I was officially hooked. I have been making my own tack ever since and even now, quality leather conjures up a feeling I can’t really put into words. Leatherwork is my passion and Schambeau leather goods are how I express it.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. If it were easy, I wouldn’t want in the game because everybody would be doing it. I chose to start out in the luxury goods market which turned out to be my biggest obstacle of all. It’s true that there are fewer high-end brands but I underestimated the importance of name recognition and how difficult it would be to establish my brand among the best.

Any entrepreneur could attest that the list of obstacles and challenges never ends but I would say that the aforementioned have been the biggest.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Schambeau story. Tell us more about it.
The Schambeau brand is simple in design and concept. I combine the durability of cowboy tack and timelessly fashioned leather goods to produce a product that will last a lifetime. If the Marlboro Man and Anna Wintour were bags and they had a baby together, they would name it Schambeau.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is when preparation meets opportunity and we are all exactly where we planned on being in life. I got mad when I was told that a terrible situation I was facing was because I had planned it that way but after giving it thought, I realized it was true.

I wanted one thing but my plans resulted in something else. When crap goes wrong, it’s not the universe being mad at you and when things go right, it’s not luck. I’ve seen people with nothing make it big and people with every advantage screw it all up. Planning and preparation are crucial.
