Meet Eunhwa Jung of Jowa. in San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eunhwa Jung.

Eunhwa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in South Korea. After graduating from university I began working full-time at an office job. Knowing this was not what I really wanted to do, I started an online boutique shop and managed it after work and on weekends. Starting this little business gave me an idea of how the industry worked.

As time went by, I took on more responsibility at my full-time job and that coupled with complex circumstances surrounding me I had to put my business on hold and focus on my main job. But, I always kept my boutique store in mind and never let go of that dream. So, how did I end up starting a business in Texas? As a university student I would work throughout the summer and save up money to travel. I continued to travel after I got an office job, as well. I travelled to several Southeast Asian countries, seized an opportunity to study in New Zealand for half a year, and went backpacking through European countries. Through these journeys I was able to experience different cultures and see, first-hand, a different sense of fashion. This life of travel led me to develop my own style. The style you see in Jowa.

I ended up moving to San Antonio, Texas in May of 2016. After living here for over a year, I realized that other than commercial brands there are not many boutique stores similar to what I am into or had access to in Korea. This sparked the idea of Jowa and it became reality in June of 2018. Good quality, modern, stylish clothing that you can wear on a daily basis within reasonable prices. So, I wanted to bring clothes from Korea to introduce to people here in Texas. I started as an online store and would join markets like CraftHer, Babes fest, etc in Austin. On March 1st, 2019 I signed a lease for a little studio for my showroom in San Antonio. And I am still traveling to Austin for the markets so I can meet my customers in person.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most difficult thing was, and still is, getting noticed as a new online clothing shop. The internet is a seemingly unlimited space where people can find pretty much anything their minds can think up. With all this traffic of information, it was hard to get noticed by people. This is the main reason I started to research and participate in market around me to meet the people I can introduce my brand to. It will still require time and effort to accomplish the level of recognition I am aiming for, but so far it is working and I will continue to do it.

Jowa. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Jowa carries hand selected women & kids clothing from South Korea. I work with South Korean designers and personally curate every single piece. Most of our pieces are simple and have a little uniqueness to it. And, as always, I choose only good quality clothing. I specialize in piecing outfits together. I take simple articles of clothing and mix and match them to create a chic and classy outfit. Which is what Jowa is becoming known for. I want people to be able to recognize the quality and vibe of our clothing and know when someone is looking Jowa. Since I personally curate every piece and carry a limited quantity, you won’t be able to find our clothing anywhere else in Texas and I believe that is what sets us apart from others.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
First of all, I started my own business in the US after only two years of living here. Just being able to start my business in a land foreign to me has been my proudest moment. I’m still getting used to living in Texas and I’m proud that my business is able to grow with me. It hasn’t even been a year and everything is going well. The sales are increasing and people are slowly noticing what I am doing. Every moment of this journey is very special to me.
