Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Waller.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I graduated from Frisco high on a full-ride scholarship to a d1 in Louisiana for basketball. I played two years there and ended up transferring, and graduating from Texas women’s University. Through college, I did hair as my side hustle and really ended up finding my passion. So after graduating I looked for a job in my degree field and I just wasn’t impressed with the entry-level positions salary, so I decided to go to cosmetology school and peruse my passion. One week into school just as I’m getting settled in, I find out I’m pregnant. And not just with one baby, two. Twins, boy did that change everything. So I continued on going to school till I was eight months pregnant. Cosmetology school is 1500 hours and about an 11-month program so I still had 4-5 months left of school to finish.
I gave birth to my twins Kali (girl) and Khari (boy). Once my babies got to be about nine months old I decided to finish school. So I went back and during that time of me going to school from 8-5 Monday thru Friday and having to also work and do hair on the side to provide for me and my kids was hard work but I did that till I graduated and as soon as I graduated I got into a shop where I did booth rent. Establishing myself over the first few months was hard, and transitioning into being a full-time stylist was a Challenge because of the inconsistency’s. But I stayed focused and continued to try to perfect my craft.
In the beauty industry it’s easy to get discouraged because you see other people booked and busy (or what looks like that ) and you think less of urself but I had to just always remind myself to focus on MY craft and that’s what I did so now two years into being licensed I’m in my own suite . Super busy and blessed making great money and my own schedule.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having my twins was def a big obstacle and being a full-time parent trying to balance work and family.
Getting clientele straight out of school was a big challenge. I really had to market myself. As well as spend a lot of time promoting and just perfecting my craft so my work speaks for itself.
Tell us more about your work.
