Meet Kate and Tom Morganelli of Centipede Digital

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate and Tom Morganelli.

Tom is from Long Island, New York. His childhood was no picnic. At the age of nine, Tom was placed into foster care where he lost out on being a normal kid and had to grow up quickly in an unstable and rough environment. Tom’s childhood shaped him into the entrepreneur he is today.

Tom has been pushing the limits for years and has always had his heart and mind in business. Tom opened his first business in 12th grade and has had his foot on the pedal ever since. Originally, a telecommunications entrepreneur, Tom learned firsthand what it takes to build a successful business from the ground up.

How did Centipede Digital come to be?
Tom was mentoring at the Dallas Entrepreneurial Center (Addison Treehouse) helping businesses with their go-to-market strategy. As he met with tons of businesses in various industries, he realized that he would help them with their strategy, but when he would check back with them, they hadn’t been able to find someone that had the skillset necessary to execute on strategy.

Out of this need, Tom decided to create the agency with the goal that businesses of all sizes and in any industry could get the sales and marketing support they needed under one roof. One day, Tom turned to Kate (his wife) and said quit your job and let’s make this agency our full-time gig! Kate quit her job at Fossil Corporate where she managed global brand marketing for Diesel, Adidas, and Kate Spade New York.

Tom and his wife Kate are the force behind the brand, Centipede Digital. After years of being open, they have brought aboard a talented pool of individuals to help with the vision. Their client list includes small businesses to national franchises.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
That’s a funny question! I would be lying to you if I told you that the road we have traveled to get to where we are was a smooth one! When Tom and I left the corporate world where we both had great jobs, people thought we were nuts! And we probably were and are! Starting a business from the ground up is extremely hard and took a lot of time and resources to get to where we are. We have experienced struggles that most entrepreneurs face like hiring the right people to join our team, finding that balance between life and work and finding the right clients to work with.

We recently just got underwritten so that we can offer the best health benefits to our employees and that was a process, but we knew it was extremely important to get that done not only for our family but for our employees and their families!

Also, we have realized that we won’t take all clients that come our way. Even when we really could have used the revenue, we will turn a client away if we feel that we are going to be more passionate about growing their business than they are. We take on clients’ businesses like they are our own and that means we don’t sleep well unless we know we’re putting 110% into a client’s business and their strategy.

Please tell us about Centipede Digital.
Centipede Digital is a full-service marketing agency. We work with businesses of all sizes and in any industry. When we say full-service, we mean it! We do market analysis, customer analysis, brand audits, website design, search engine optimization, digital marketing, creative services, social media marketing, public relations, copywriting, virtual tours, videography, brand photography, marketing automation, and much more.

We typically work in three different ways with our clients:

1). We act as a client’s entire marketing team (we create the strategy and execute on all fronts)

2). We recently split out our consulting service to Centipede Consulting, Inc. in order to place a laser focus on risk mitigation for clients in healthcare, government and various other industries.

3). We act as a portion of the marketing team, focusing on a specific element like digital marketing or public relations, etc.

What sets you apart from others?
We are transparent by nature, and that means you know exactly what you’re going to get from us and that’s honesty and passion! We also won’t take more than one client of a particular industry in a geographic area — we just don’t think it’s fair to the client to take on them and their competitors!

I am so proud of the work we do for our clients, and our clients have told us that they appreciate what we do. I look around the office every day and think “wow we’ve made it.”

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Kate – I remember in the sixth grade, we had to write a marketing plan for a make-believe company and I was stoked! I chose to create an ice cream parlor. Part of the assignment was to develop marketing assets and choose marketing channels to promote the business.  I created menus, flyers, postcards, and business cards. I took it to a new level when I created a radio skit where I sang a jingle. While most kids in my class looked at the project as a daunting task, I had a blast and that’s when I knew I was meant for a life of creativity.

Tom – As a group home kid, I didn’t have the finer things in life. I remember being told that I wasn’t going to make it. That I wouldn’t amount to anything!

I kept that close to me as I grew up and when I opened my first business, I said to myself that “they were all wrong!” I was more than something, I was someone! I have always been determined and will not let anyone stand in the way of achieving greatness!
