Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Nguyen.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began decorating cakes about nine years ago and fell in love with it immediately. It started out as a hobby, then slowly turned into a part-time adventure (I dislike the word job because I don’t see it as a job), and now it’s my full-time passion. I recently quit my corporate position as a Merchandise Assistant in menswear to focus on and grow my cake business. So far it’s been an incredible decision. All of my custom cakes are made from scratch with whole and natural ingredients, there are no preservatives or boxed mixes used in any of my recipes.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, coming to terms with the decision to quit a steady paycheck, 401k, healthcare insurance, etc. was not an easy one. I loved both of my positions equally, I consider myself lucky in that I had a creative outlet after a stressful day at my full-timer, but then I started to lose that balance. I was losing sleep because I was staying up past 2am finishing up with a fondant sculpture. I couldn’t keep up with the demands at work while trying to attend to my own business’ growing needs at the same time. I knew I had to quit one. Scaling back my cake orders would seem the most logical choice at the time, but if I was being truly honest with myself, it was the only thing that kept me happy. I did (and still do) worry that I might not have the orders to justify quitting my full-time position, but it was a risk I was willing to take. It was so visceral to me that caking full time is what I am meant to do. I have my slow weeks but I actually welcome and enjoy the small break to recuperate myself. I love what I do however my goal this year is to improve on my timing and efficiency in the kitchen. There’s always going to be an opportunity to work smarter and not harder 😉
Cultivated Cake Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Cultivated Cake Studio was born out of my passion for baking and grew into a love for creating and design. I am the owner of this business and I specialize in custom cakes and desserts. I am so proud of how far my small business has come in the last couple of years, it’s so crazy to look back on my past work to see how much it’s grown and evolved.
I think my bright and clean style sets me apart from other local businesses, but truthfully I try not to compare myself to others, instead I focus on my own goals and set them according to how it will impact my business’ growth, guarantee my clients’ satisfaction and return, and in turn a healthier mindset for myself.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is that healthy balance between doing what you love and getting enough sleep doing it. There’s this quote I love and now live by:
“Destroy the idea that you have to be constantly working or grinding in order to be successful. Embrace the concept that rest, recovery, and reflection are essential parts of the progress towards a successful and ultimately happy life.”
Setting realistic goals for myself and my business and accomplishing them is my measure for success but only if the outcome produces a happier and healthier return.
