Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay and Chrissy Williams.
A native of Texas, Kay found her calling to gastronomy at the age of four. Her earliest memory was standing on the step stool beside her mother Chrissy while making peanut butter cookies from scratch. Reared in a military family she traveled extensively and lived in various states throughout the country maintaining her induction into the National Junior Honor Society.
At the age of 16, her family relocated to the Washington, D.C. area. She was accepted into C.S. Monroe Technology Center at the Loudoun Governor’s Career and Technical Academy a Vocational Secondary School while simultaneously completing her academic studies at High School and leading the Cooking Club. She maintained a 3.89 GPA and induction into the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society alike. She competed within her Culinary Arts Technical Program to win a spot on the State ProStart Culinary Competition Team. Out of all the students in her Culinary Program, she won 1st place crafting a cream of chicken soup bread bowl, salad with dressing, sugar cookie all in one hour with the use of one burner and no access to ice or running water. Once her culinary skills spoke for her passion and love of cooking, she led her team to victory with a Hawaiian inspired themed three-course meal in the State ProStart Culinary Competition. Her team won! This accomplishment earned her numerous scholarships at several Universities, recognition amongst peers and world-renowned Chefs and introductions to Congressional dignitaries.
She graduated an entire year early at the age of 17, while working part-time at a national chain bakery then subsequently at a major brand hotel in the banquets department. During the Summer of 2018 at 17 years old, she attended the Journey for Juniors Summer Program at the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, New York. That same Summer she enrolled in Sullivan University majoring in Hotel and Restaurant Management and has been on the Dean’s List every semester. In January 2019, she along with her families’ support established her culinary business Modern Rose Cupcakery and Events LLC. She is a Nationally Certified ServSafe Food Manager and possesses ServSafe Food Handler Certification in multiple States. Her family relocated back to her home state of Texas and she then became one of the youngest Chefs at a major brand hotel.
Now, currently at the age of 18, there is no stopping her! Throughout her culinary journey, she aims to inspire others to reach their full potential and educate them on pursuing their passion wherever that may lead! She encourages you to take the time to enjoy life’s moments and “stop and taste Modern Rose Cupcakery!”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No stranger to adversity she was diagnosed with a severe medical condition Scoliosis, with a life-altering 42-degree curve in her spine at the age of 13. However, she did not let her deter her from having fun and pursuing her passions. She participated in Athletics 100 meter dash and her Soccer Team won 2nd place in the Division. She was a Freshman and Junior Varsity Cheerleader in high school attending summer cheer camps at the University of Texas Denton.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Modern Rose Cupcakery and Events – what should we know?
A family-owned and operated bakery, this mother/daughter team specializes in creating baked from scratch Rose themed cupcakes, cakes, cookies, pies, truffles and various pastries for large and small events. Within the first year of opening, I was the lead Patisserie for a coffee shop, baking in a commercial kitchen, delivering hundreds of wholesale pastry items three times per week. What sets me apart from other culinary artists is that I am pursuing my passion at a young age. I am devoting my time, energy and talents to chase my passion!
