Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Wells.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
This Organization is a true passion of mine. I started this when I first moved to the DFW area in 2009 during my undergraduate of year of college I was volunteering with numerous organization and witnessed so many things I did not like from persons being kicked out of treatment centers and mental health hospitals because they no longer have insurance to cover the cost of their stay. Women being kicked out of battered women shelters or turned away because they were not considered in an emergency state. I watched these women go to back to their abusers and ultimately lose their life.
Going through these different organizations and interning with each and every one of them I learned I do not want to be apart of companies who are hurting those who are hurting. So I had the bright idea to start something of my own. An organization who would provide services to those in need without preconceived judgment. The idea was to offer services in one location to prevent the frustration of the person in need.
It has been a bumpy road, many ups, and downs with being able to provide services to clients as well as being able to grow strategically.
Since receiving our official non-profit status with the IRS in 2015 and the completion of my Master’s degree we have been able to move forward full force helping more than 300 clients with services from Counseling, Case Management, and social services to support a family in need.
Has it been a smooth road?
This has not been a smooth road at all. The biggest challenge was and still is being a “new” non-profit there are thousands of non-profits in the DFW area and we are constantly competing with to secure funding to support our missions and programs.
Every non-profit has to have the ask, we reach out to businesses, foundations, companies and so on but so does everyone else. It gets someone discouraging at times but we have to try and remain positive. Another big struggle is just reaching out to our population as mentioned before there are many non-profits in the area and we have to reach out to each of them and let them know we are here to support them as well as support the clients in need.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
New Life Individual and Family Services is an organization designed to provide all services to those in need by making is affordable or accessible to those in need. We are actually a two-part company New Life Individual and Family Services and New Life IFS Rescue.
New Life individual and Family Services focuses on person first services. We work to provide mental health services, case management and counseling to those in need. What makes me so proud of the services we offer s the fact we do not send you down a rabbit hole of phone calls and closed doors before giving up or finally finding a place to get the services requested.
A typical situation of a person who is need of inpatient mental health care. They call 911 and go through an intake process of the police offers hospital of choice once in they are released with a piece of paper with instructions on it and encouraged to come back for outpatient services. All of this sounds great but looking from the client’s standpoint they have no transportation to outpatient services, their insurance is not going to cover the visits or the co-pay is astronomical, the stress becomes insurmountable and we get right back to square one with a call to 911.
When a client discharges from the hospital and makes the phone call to New Life Individual and Family Services or the discharge planner makes the contact to us we immediately get to work. Coordinating doctor visits providing free counseling and case management services, providing transportation to services in need. Providing the client with the support needed to prevent the recidivism of going back to the hospital. We take the pride in breaking the treatment cycle. We educate the community on not just the cycle of addiction but the cycle of treatment.
Besides our all-inclusive support services, the number one thing that sets us apart is our Rescue division. This division was started because of the mental health services we provide. The goal of our rescue team is to find the four-legged friends who are at risk of being euthanized and putting them to work as a service animal, therapy animal, or emotional support animal. We have been able to rescue so many lives not just animals but their people as well. We work with the families to provide an assistance animal without the astronomical fees.
We are a one of a kind organization with many different faces to it, but the faces we have are to provide a stress-free opportunity for people to get back on their feet and become a success.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is a difficult question to answer Dallas is a great city to do many things. Yes, this is a great place to have a city like ours because you want to start a business in a location where there is a need and there is definitely a need in Dallas.
However, there is also not many resources to tell you where to go and how truly get involved. I think this is a great city for someone who is willing to take many door slams in he face and not willing to give up. Dallas could improve by providing data or locations of where the data is to provide the greatest need to the greatest number of people.
