Today we’d like to introduce you to Keeley Kourvelas.
Keeley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Even my brief story takes me back to my childhood. I grew up playing every sport you could name and became a competitive athlete as I got older. It’s always been in my blood; my dad ran track for TCU and my mom was an athlete with a number of outlets. After high school, fitness was always the constant in my life and it was always my outlet, no matter where I was or what I was trying to accomplish. After changing my major multiple times, it finally clicked that my passions lie in health, fitness, and helping others, so it only made sense to pursue it as a career. I went on to become a Certified Health & Wellness Coach and spent a few years back in Dallas finding my place. I was still struggling settling on one career path so instead of choosing one, I just did it all. I worked as a bartender, social media coordinator, assistant in commercial real estate, and started a fitness blog with one of my best friends. You could say I was a little lost but that’s all part of the process, right? Fast forward a year and thanks to some family friends whom I love dearly, I was presented with an opportunity to manage the first-ever HOTWORX location in central Dallas. It was an incredible opportunity but little did I know how life-changing it would be. To be involved with something new and innovating from the very beginning is such an experience. From construction, build-out, soft-opening, Grand-Opening, and a year of operations, I’ve found myself in a job that I absolutely love. Every day I get to meet new people, share my passions, and help others accomplish their health and fitness goals. It’s incredible that I get to build relationships with people from all walks of life and be a small part of their health and wellness journey. Recently, I competed in the HOTWORX Virtual Instructor Competition and became one of the 2019-2020 Top 5 HOTWORX Virtual Instructors. I’m honored to have the opportunity to provide that same outlet that fitness gives me to HOTWORX members worldwide and continue to encourage them on their fitness journey. I can’t wait for what’s to come.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course not. Does anything worth having in life come easy? Everyone has a story and things have been a little rough along the way. I experienced a lot of loss in a short amount of time at a young age. Specifically, I lost my dad to a lung disease when I was in eighth grade at the age of 13. This brought a number of struggles throughout high school and when I was in college, my battle with anxiety and depression was at its peak. Looking back, I can see how long I suffered without knowing it. I had days and weeks where I wasn’t functioning in my daily life and I’m so thankful that I got the help I needed. If you’re in this situation and feel like there’s no hope, trust me there always is.
As I mentioned, I spent a few years after college trying to finding my place. I was happy and enjoying life but the feeling of having no clue where life was going to take me was daunting. I was still learning to manage my anxiety and depression and had quite a few bad days among the good. I remember standing outside of work one day crying on the phone with my mom questioning all of my decisions and wondering “what if?” We all face big moments in life when we’re presented with opportunities and instead of fearing those moments and opportunities, you face them with courage and confidence. These moments are the turning points that we’ll look back on and see how far we’ve come.
Needless to say, it’s been a roller coaster but all the struggles and choices along the way have been stepping stones for where I am today, I’ve found my place with HOTWORX and I’m content but not settled. I have a burning desire to continue to grow and reach even bigger accomplishments. There will continue to be ups and downs but all you can do is live, learn, and have some (a lot of) fun along the way. One of the most important lessons I learned from a young age is that we’re not always guaranteed another day. Be something and do something with the time that you have.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the HOTWORX story. Tell us more about the business.
HOTWORX is a 24 Hour Infrared Fitness Studio. We use 3D training to combine heat, infrared energy, and exercise for the most effective exercise program in the industry. Infrared energy accelerates detoxification and aids in workout recovery, among other benefits. Under one roof, we offer 15-minute H.I.I.T (High-Intensity Interval Training) sessions and 30-minute isometric workouts, all virtually led in an infrared sauna. This includes everything from Cycle, Row, Yoga, Pilates, Bands, and more.
I’m proud of how to innovate this concept is and how quickly it’s growing. HOTWORX is able to provide customers with the results they want and need. We’re giving people their time back and we’re making fitness convenient. It’s exciting to see people become passionate about the brand and pursue it for themselves. I was lucky enough to attend my second HOTWORX convention in July and I’ve never been surrounded by more incredible people. You’ll never meet a more hard-working, inspiring, genuine group and It’s one of the reasons I love this company so much.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t know if I believe in luck or not. I definitely believe in fate and blessings. It might sound cliche but I truly believe that everything happens for a reason and what’s meant to be will be. My faith in the Lord has guided me through each success, failure, opportunity, and struggle. It’s crazy to look back and see how everything slowly plays out according to God’s plan. Looking at my future, it’s comforting to know that I’ll always have that faith and guidance.
About ten years ago, I shared an umbrella at a football game with a stranger. She and her family quickly became my “second family” and we’ve been through just about everything together. That stranger was Stacy and she’s the owner of HOTWORX Dallas (Skillman & Abrams) that I now manage. I wouldn’t call that luck, I’d call it fate. And it’s been more than a blessing for the past ten years.
