Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith & Gwen Albee.
Keith & Gwen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When Keith retired from a local defense contractor, after a long career, Gwen told him that he was not coming home to watch TV and he needed to find something to do. Eight months later, he decided to learn how to braze in the hope of making Yard Art from copper. After two months of trial and error, he was getting the hang of it and starting to make the first pieces. Gwen had picked up some of his wire and began making rings at the kitchen table that caught the interest of friends and family. As they progressed, Yard Art became Wall Hangings and rings expanded to become a full line of jewelry. When friends and family had all the things they needed (or wanted), they began to do events around the Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex, where they were exposed to different mediums and skills. Soon they had built a workshop at their home, expanded the number of events, and moved into other mediums and products. Gwen had incorporated her art skills into the pieces, and Keith had added sun catchers and crosses made from horseshoes and nails, to name a few. Their mission is to keep the product lines fresh with unique pieces with superior quality.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest challenge has been the events? How many? Which ones and what types best suit our style and products. When we started, we would attend High School craft shows, bazaars, and whatever we saw. We did one outside event and decided that that would be our last since that day was a windy one. We began to learn that handcrafted events were more to our style and found a following with the Holistic Fair Community. We have made dozen of changes and adjustments to our booth, displays, and the overall presentation of our products. I don’t think it ever ends, and we continue to evolve as we go forward.
Please tell us about KKG Creations.
We have a complete line of Copper and Healing Stone Jewelry, Metal Art and Steampunk Lamps. Originality, Imagination, and Handcrafted Quality Products makes KKG Creations unique amongst our peers and at the events that we attend.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Maybe we might have migrated to the handcrafted shows sooner, but honestly, the whole thing is a learning process that teaches you the do and don’ts. You learn along the way where your strengths and weaknesses are and what works for you and what does not. Most of all, you should never quit learning and keep moving forward whether it is a good event or not.
