Meet Kellie Cation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellie Cation.

Kellie, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a creative streak and a passion for aesthetics. I have spent time exploring many facets of the arts. With Fashion it always evoked interest and excitement for me so in college. I studied fashion design.

Later I became a hairstylist. I worked for the most cutting edge company, world-renown Toni & Guy. There I became an educator, worked on many of their incredible shows and entered their yearly Photographic Award Competitions -which were images of work in particular categories that were judged. And I won an award one year. Once I reached my goal of becoming self-employed, I found it gratifying in so many aspects, yet I missed the creative and collaborative adventures I had so often participated in.

Then a talented friend of mine who works with an agency doing hair and makeup for professional shoots recommended I enter into this realm. I reached out to other creatives to collaborate and soon, I was learning the ropes. My focus is on hair. I am not a makeup artist. Although my creativity and vision sometimes reach way over into all the other areas from wardrobe, makeup and background to camera angle, pose and theme. So on a few occasions, I’ve been given rein to run with the total concept essentially being the art director. Now along with my salon work, I work on professional shoots with many talented photographers, makeup artists, wardrobe stylists, and aspiring or agency models. I enjoy the projects and inspiration that comes from working with all of them.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been relatively smooth overall for me. I feel fortunate for the mentoring I received. One challenge can be the initial process of learning how to reach out and whom to reach out to. Networking and sites like Model Mayhem, Kavyar and Instagram are great starts to connecting you to other creatives.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a professional freelance hairstylist based in Dallas. My work focuses on creating hair looks for the model(s) based on the mood or theme of a photoshoot which is primarily beauty or fashion. My creative focus, individuality and attention to detail may set me apart from others along with liking to create a total look for the shoot.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about Dallas is the impressive art scene, newer buildings, restaurants, friendly people, sports teams, lower cost of living and I love, love the Katy Trail.

I least like the heat of the summers and lack of mountains or ocean.
