Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedi Newson and Machanta Newson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m Kennedi and I am eight years old in the 2nd Grade at Shields Elementary in the Red Oak School District in Glenn Heights, TX. I love to play soccer and baseball and hanging with my big brother Ethan! I am a Girl Scout and a mother to my puppy Duke! I am a normal kid with a passion to serve those in my community.
I asked my parents to help me serve people in need in my community starting with feeding the homeless. I want to help them and others in need. With your help, I can help other kids like me live a normal life without worry about their basic needs.
Kennedi Kares began one cold night in November 2016 while I was attending Movies In the Park with my mom. I was cold and I knew that the homeless were cold too. I asked my mom if we can help them on Thanksgiving.
My parents and my Girl Scout Troop helped me collect blankets and socks for them and I created my menu for my parents to cook. On November 25, 2017, we served our first 100 people.
On that day, I saw children like me who were hungry, without clothes, books, or even toys! I knew I had to do more. In 2018 I asked my parents to help me do more. We fed the homeless at Thanksgiving and Christmas and I even gave away my toys! I know that the homeless are in need year-round and I need your help to serve them in a greater way.
Kennedi Kares is a nonprofit organization that seeks to serve community members by providing a tangible ministry that encompasses capturing the entire spectrum of needs of the most underserved in our communities. We aim to do this by fulfilling needs in 4 Vital Areas:
Food, Clothing, Toiletry Items, Feminine Products, etc.)
Individual & Group Counseling, Mentoring, Referrals, etc.
Tutoring, Parent Education Classes, Books, School Supplies, etc.
Toys, Assistance for extracurricular activities, Field Trips, etc.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Because we are a new organization, we are learning the ropes on how to operate more like a fully recognized business and less like a home run hobby. We are learning how to solicit help and support from others and as a result of this current learning curve, there are some bumps in the road.
Kennedi Kares – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are most proud that our 8-year-old daughter has the heart to serve others! We are so blessed that she wants to help others, particularly the homeless.
We are always open to support from members of our community. We are in need of support to accomplish our goals.
To accomplish the goals we need:
Donations of Children’s Books
Donations of Children’s Toys
Sponsorship of children with rec activities
Donations of Time
Donations of In-Kind Services
Donations of Space
Van for deliveries
Support and Encouragement!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment was at Thanksgiving of 2018. We prayed before we left for the food to stretch. As we arrived, we knew there were more people than we have enough food to feed. As we were running out of food, my mother began to cry and pray again. Just as we were preparing to leave, three food trucks pulled up and the remaining people were able to eat! We began praising the Lord and my mother shared with me that because we prayed and made an effort to help others, the Lord blessed our efforts! We will never forget that day!
